New engine

Like everyone else has said, put a 4G93 (1.8l) engine and youll have more power and reliability, and these engines are fun to modify with noticeable results

and commodores...........lol, in terms of power there not that impressive, ive dragged 2 VX commodores and they beat me by not even a bonnets worth up to 90km/h (this is with my *poo* chinese, no traction tyres)

coz commos power to weight is pretty pathetic, i can almost level your average POS commo (and thats saying something)

Commodores fill a need in our community... cheap, large, land barges...devoid of any niceties, style or driving pleasure.... I know, I have a Falcon BF to tow with...and they're horrid. Both our Saab and Mitsu are way better in the twisties.

Commodores... I seriously can't believe you suggested that...
Big pieces of bogan metal, that are only fun in the wet when cops aren't around.
Drop a 1.8 in, exhaust, cai. Done. Unless you plan to spend 15k doing it properly.

Oh, you guys missed stroker kit in the mods.
And most of the boys in blue wouldn't know the difference if you did a dohc conversion too.

Unless they checked the engine plate and it said SOHC and it's clearly DOHC...

My father had a VE SSV, nice car inside, leather seats, not loud road noise, easy to drive, though the auto box was shockingly bad, no tuning of the engine, just a down right whale at times to steer. He just got a HSV R8, bout 1000000x better then the SSV in every sense. So I think commodores are 'bogan' but then the HSV's (based off the commodore shape) and actual worked machines... /2c.

I saw a new Senator up close yesterday... Could think of 10 cars I would rather spend $70+K on...

1) Evo X
2) Any Volvo
3) Any BMW
4) Any Lexus
5)... sorry, the list goes for miles until Holden comes up

I would never spend 70k on a holden... though for a company car I'd be happy with a HSV :p

Totally off topic but I agree with you skippy on the VE. Ive driven the fleet models from work and they are nice "comfort" cars but handling and the gearbox are shocking. I wonder if the SV6s in manual are any good? I havent had a chance to drive a HSV but with the carbon tax and high pertol prices I expect the big Aussie v8 to die a slow lingering death. Already you can pick up manual SS'es for around $10g below their retail.

On topic: unless youre made of money there is no way in hell you can make a lancer a speed machine as you would need to gut the chassis and practically replace everything under the bonnet. I have a 4g93 in my lancer and I reckon its pretty good, especially in a performance for fuel economy trade off sense and has plenty of grunt even at highway speeds. I suggest you spend your money on handling mods such as a full suspension upgrade, strut braces and sway bars. Use the leftovers to improve engine breathing through a better exhaust system, including headers and a (LEGAL!!!) high flow cat. Those mods should make you better in the twisties and give you good bang for your buck.

^ this...

I think 120kw is enough, for everyday use... I scare most Maloo owners in twisties, because they only make good in the straights anyway.. Better brakes, suspension and chassis stiffening is the go.

Lancer owners should look up the Mazda MX5.

Prime example of an underpowered car that punches well above its kw purely due to good handling and cornering. It does 0 - 100 in over 7 secs but is still considered one of the best sports cars in the world and according to an actual Mazda salesperson it easily takes out the rx8 on track.

lol at the ve hate. you cant compare them really. theyre meant for straightlines and comfort.

and i doubt the v8 will die out any time soon. the things that the v8 represent will burn for ever within the hearts of the v8 fans. they wont let it die

I really hope you understand the work involved in that
I do, but 3 months off the road, im willing to do tinkering (not the right word for it but im scattered from yesterday still cant think of a better word)

and Res, dream phase, not really, im not aiming to make my lancer extremely fast, just so it's not so underpowered, but seriously, 4g93, CAI, 4-2-1 extractors, high flow cat, and struts and braces isn't that much work to do in 3 months, ill probably have it resprayed too
most of the cars in here have those upgrades, im just doing it all at once so my cars done for when i get my liscence back

Doing the maths mate if you work full time for 3 months (ie. 7.5 hrs each day at 26 an hour, 5 days a week) and get taxed at 15% you will only have ~$9,900 to play with. Im sure you will buy something else for yourself in the meantime.

For a re-spray you are looking at around $5,000 for labour and paint. Short of doing all the labour yourself and buying parts at rock bottom prices I dunno how you're gunna pull all this work off.

Coils are a $1,000 plus labour if you dont have knowledge to fit. For a total exhaust extractors back set up you're probably looking at $1,000 for parts and labour. Thats $7,000 right there. And you havent even put in a new engine.

Its easy to say I wanna mod my car but once you start doing it the $$$ add up and it never turns out as cheap on paper as it does in your head. First get the engine in then think about upgrades one at a time.

Thats my 2 cents.

depends if its closed door respray or full inside out respray.

im getting a closed door respray for $1800 with my tax.

my work is after hours, 5-11, not going for coils, aiming for second hand struts, and im probs gonna do it all myself, just to learn on cars get practice for my apprenticeship next year, and the paint is free cause my friend does it for a hobby

I know its going to be more expensive than it seems in my head, it always is, i dont mean to be all defensive and self righteous, but i do know what I'm doing, somewhat, and if I get stuck, I know heaps of mechanics friends that can help me out for installation etc

Nice deal Lachy. Im basing this off of what I have heard from others. Mate of mine only managed to do a sh***y backyard job for a grand here in Adelaide (mainly materials cost I gather). Another mate for cash in hand work by professional spraypainter was charged a grand for bonnet respray, rear bar respray and removal of wing and hole sealing with respray.

I dunno if its the fact that you blokes are on the east coast or what but fk me you all seem to get hard to believe deals that blow anything I have ever heard of outta the water...

lol yeah probably cheaper coz its more competitive on the east cost with a lot more businesses.
but they guys im going through are only a company of probably a year or 2 years old so their prices are still cheap probably due to wanting their business to grow.

googled prices of all the things i wanted, just to buy them, about 5000
possibly 6000 if i buy them new
i know its google and not always accurate on prices, but it gives me a realistic number
which will take me ABOUT 8 weeks to save for
and this is all only a plan at this stage...

haha yea most likey, but after all the main things ive got on a list nows, it will be smaller things like clusters, clear side lights, colour coded handles etc, and then theres the interior styling, the only big one left in my imaginary list
but yea, i know ill end up paying like 10 G on it before i get off my P's, then all the turbo's and higher end performance upgrades come into play
