Stereo Thread - questions, queries, bragging,

@ARC: das hot :p

i have a question....

while i am familiar with bridging amps, are there any particular drawbacks to doing this?

also, just to make sure I have things right... bridging is using, eg. both channels of a two channel amp for one speaker, usually a sub, right?

yes that is correct, bridging will allow full amp power to be used for the woofer instead of just half on a 2 channel amp. Only draw backs I see is reduced tuning capability due to it not being on 1 channel, if not connected to the HU right the sub can be receiving 2 different signals, this is bad

For the new year I got a new head unit for my CC, I've now had 3 Kenwood systems. I also recently replaced the rear speakers 6x9 3Way Kenwood's I got on sale when WOW when out of business last year.

The new head unit (KDCU553BT) is a single DIN as I like having the space below it for storage, it has USB so I can plug in my iPhone and to listen to music and charge it up without needing a separate lead.

Apart from that it's pretty basic, AM/FM CD oh but it does have Bluetooth for my phone :)

I'm going to hit the Boxing Day sales tomorrow and pick up a new head unit, cause OEM is past used by date.

Any recommendations as to brand, or is it like a Honda vs Mitsu personal preference thing ?
I don't really care what, so long as it works and plays music.
I won't be looking to have a mad system, Just 4 speakers, CD/USB, maybe outputs so I can add a amp and small sub later.

Any suggestions?

Think about getting something that also has BlueTooth for your phone.

Last year I got a new Kenwood at around $125 from JB HiFi, about half it's original price.

Are you thinking a single DIN unit?

I've had a mix of headunits over the years as well, never had one with USB though.
I don't really care about Bluetooth for my phone, I'd never use it through the headunit.
I think I'll look to spend anywhere from $1-150 on one.

USB or iPod connection means you can have 1000s of songs with you. It's also much better that a AUX plug for audio quality and you can charge your phone on the way to work if it's running low.

AUX is really all you need these days, just carry all your beats on your phone or ipod and baamm. Who actually buys a headunit for playing CD's these days? no one cause all these other nifty features have stolen the spotlight and allow you to do things more efficiently,

Bluetooth could be a useful feature too ARC for calls, better than having a separate handsfree device taking up unnecessary room in the car etc..

somewhat for bragging purposes:

Head Unit: Alpine CDE-148EBT
Front Speakers: Focal P165 V15
Rear Speakers: Alpine type S (will be upgraded to focals soonish)
Amp/s: 1x Alpine old school 2Ch comp amp powering the type S's, 1x Kicker 400RMS for the sub (not currently in car)
Sub/s: 1x 12" JL Audio w3 600RMS (not currently in car)

Has anyone tried making custom speaker grills for their doors?

I'm thinking of some mesh from Bunnings with some hex screws/bolts to hold them in place.

I'm thinking of shaping it to fit the speaker shape in the door, I'll have to shop around and see what I can find.

I've got all alpine in my car including head unit (which hasn't been installed yet but I'm guessing it's great coz it's got USB and Bluetooth) hahahaha

Can you get headunits without a CD player? Just radio tuner and USB input?

I don't really want to go the path I did many years ago with my first car, when I bought a radio/cassette headunit.
My mate at the time who installed it was like... "Why didn't you get a CD one"
As hindsight would have it, radio/CD became the norm shortly after

Alpine make this one with no CD player (think they might have another one too) http://www.alpine.com.au/showItem.php?item_id=37

JB HI FI do really good prices. My dad said the speakers he got me were $150 and $80 for the head unit but on the Alpine website the exact same speakers were almost triple the price lol I'm sure they'd have one at JB without a CD thing but tbh I don't think there's any point in searching for one without a CD player IMO. haha almost all units these days have CD players, coz people still use them (like me lol) :p

Meh, still more than I was wanting to spend.
I'll hit Supercheap and Repco in the morning after work and see what's what.
