Lowering springs/heights opinions.

whooa.. to tired to read that. super lows all round if your going to ignore the comments about coils.

^^agreed^^ Will read after uni lol.

I've just got a question about springs (didn't want to start new thread). Can you control the hieght of the springs with your shocks or something or not? Or does it purely depend on the spring rate on how low your car will go?

EDIT: Read the loong post, stuff makes sense now

With coilovers "yes", with springs, you need to buy the short coil spring to have a lower ride, or have them compressed.

So if I bought some lowering springs, and they didn't drop my car enough I could compress them... Is that a relatively easy job, or is it professional only? Only reason I'm asking is that I don't really wanna go buy coilovers for ol' haily over here and then have a chance at not being able to sell em :(

I know this has all been gone through before, and I know I have written up much the same thing before but coilovers arent the only option, and not always the best. As you have said you're on a budget, springs will be fine. I have been in plenty of cars with standard shocks with superlows and the ride is fine. It can 'smack' every now and then on big bumps but nowhere near as bad as how much you will feel coilovers. The issue is that the standard struts wear a lot quicker because of the much reduced travel and the standard struts are not designed for this.

For everyone comparing the handling of superlows to coilovers, its like apples to oranges. Standard king springs are not designed for performance, they're designed for being the easiest option to lower your car, and keeping as close to standard ride as possible. They are soft springs designed for street driven cars - not race cars. If you want performance you can still get it through spring and shock combos, but you can't expect the springs to be something they're not. If you want performance you need stiffer rate springs, which have to be specially ordered. You can get them through Kings or pretty much any manufacturer of springs and from memory they were 250-300 for the pair, you just have to ask for a custom spring rate and they ask you how stiff you're looking at and what you're going to use them for.

Most of the VW guys who are serious about track work are using spring/shock setups because they can tune them to handle better than coilovers. Going to proper adjustable Koni/Bilstein shocks and custom H&R, Eibach, etc. springs can provide awesome handling. Base level coilovers provide good handling and tuning options - not great. They're good handling for the price, but can also be too harsh for a lot of everyday drivers. If you want fantastic handling options and adjustable height you need to spend 2500 upwards on a set.

Ask yourself what you want from a set, if you want to be able to move the height of your car up and down to where you want it, by all means pay the money for coilovers. If you just want to drop your car for cheap, chuck some king springs or Lovells in it.

This.

I've had Kings and now BC Coilovers. There for the CJ is no comparisson. The King springs blow in every way for the CJs, the handling is *poo* (jumps all around the place on bumpy roads), the ride is *poo* (the coilovers on a low dampening are more comfortable) and the way they make the car sit is *poo*. Also unless things have recently changed with the CJ you get either a ES/VR or VRX (stronger dampening) OEM from Mitsubishi or buy them elsewhere as KYB replacements (they make the OEM ones anyway), there aren't performance struts available. The coilovers also tend to be lighter and have bigger pistons in them....

lows = 30mm drop
superlows = 50-60mm drop depending on car

both are still to high IMO
coilovers ftw. u'll never look back.

anyone know roughly how much labor would cost to get the springs fitted?
because i know whats involved and roughly how to do it, i just dont have the equiptment to do it

I think I paid $450 for springs + fitting on all 4 corners when I had mine done. Springs were about $300 or so of that cost. So $150 labour which included a balance/alignment.

150s pretty reasonable. If you want to give it a crack though a set of spring compressors can be had for $60 or less, can't Imagine you'd need much else?

then an additional $50 for beer as doing it without liquid courage could end bad :p
but i reckon i might call up a few places and see if i can get a few diff quotes for fittin/allign/balance and also time frame to do it, i was thinkin about gettin some compressors and trying myself, but knowing me it could only end with 1 undrivable car and 1 long push bike ride :p

You might not be able to get it done as cheaply as I had it done due to buying the springs off them (so they were making margin there too), you might be looking at $200+ if you already have the springs and are just looking to get labour done.

Still, ring around - better to get a price from the horses mouth rather than speculating here :)

I'm not sure whats involved with the lancer compared to my commodore(vx) but going price seemed to be 160 in vic and found a guy willing to do it for 130. ended up borrowing spring compressors and doing it with my dad.

yeah iv got the 2dr. RPW are sellin ksports but are up around the $1600 mark
check out hens performance, pretty sure they had em from $1199

Hey mate just wana put in my opinion. I got Superlow Kings on the front for $130 2 inch drop.. $90 for custom springs for the rear 3.5 Inch drop with Shortened shocks for $200.. Depending on the rim size, wont need shortened shocks for the front, will for 17z atleast.. Putting them in will cost you bout $90 a pair.. Unless U do as I did by just putting them in yurself, all you'll need is a compressor, impact wrench, Spring compressors and some time lol.. Like in previous comments, If U want it for racing go Coilovers, for Street use go springs.. I got mine done, isnt bumpy at all..

This is how mine came out..
