Lowering springs/heights opinions.

Looking at lowering my coupe so just wondering what springs peoples are running. Contemplating lows all round, low rears super low fronts or super lows all round. Just got a standard MR kit so scrapage shouldn't be an issue. Not overly concerned about ride quality. Pics of rides and suggestions would be nice.

In all fairness, you didn't really answer the question, as he asked for heights of springs and is obviously talking about springs only if he is using terms like low and superlow.
As for the question, I'm running KS superlows front and rear on 205/40/R17s and it looks like this:

sorry, if you go coilovers you can go any hight you want, not just limeted to what springs you can buy.

coilovers arnt much more $$ over doin springs and shocks proply

True, but for a lot of people who just want to do springs without shocks (or do springs and then shocks later), the extra cash for coilovers is simply out of the question. They are the best of both worlds but unfortunately just a bit too expensive for the average modder to justify.

go superlows at the front and lows at the rear
(or do it right the first time and coilover the beech)

that is superlows at the front and stock rear

i justify $1200 on a set of suspention replacements, do it right the first time, as i have found in modding cutting corners wont get you far

not sure of the brand but they were yellow.. superlow front and rear on 205/40 R17"s

also if ur planning on lowering please. please do shocks as well. i bought the car with the springs and stock shocks, the shocks were *fudge*ed! had the worst ride ever because of the wear on the shocks caused by them traveling more than they were meant to handled like *poo* and bumps were killer.

i totally agree, if u see urself as a more serious modder, or like fun spirited driving.... there is no other option*
if that described u then u are probably going to buy some later down track anyways so why not just get them now and not wast money on springs?

*i found this out trying to follow more1 down tambo mountain, springs just wont keep ur traction

also use this as a example have you heard of top level D1 drifters using lowered springs & struts? (not saying your a drifter etc but for the extra bit of dosh why not spoil your car you wont regret it trust me i spent money on low's,sl's & new struts & then went & bought coils lol so do it right do it once

yeh, gotta agree with the coils being the smartest option, if your lookin at buyin lowered springs and shocks you can be lookin around 800-900 all around, it doesnt take much work to save that extra 100-200 to get some coils and have the best of both worlds

Samwyz got a good deal from me for kings and kyb struts.

Your looking at around 900 for KYB struts and king springs NEW!

Samwyz car looks like this...

on 215/17/40??? yeah?

i have king superlow springs i think they are pretty good
and depending on if you want to get a body kit in the future they also sit lower than standard bummpers so i would take that into concideration also

I know this has all been gone through before, and I know I have written up much the same thing before but coilovers arent the only option, and not always the best. As you have said you're on a budget, springs will be fine. I have been in plenty of cars with standard shocks with superlows and the ride is fine. It can 'smack' every now and then on big bumps but nowhere near as bad as how much you will feel coilovers. The issue is that the standard struts wear a lot quicker because of the much reduced travel and the standard struts are not designed for this.

For everyone comparing the handling of superlows to coilovers, its like apples to oranges. Standard king springs are not designed for performance, they're designed for being the easiest option to lower your car, and keeping as close to standard ride as possible. They are soft springs designed for street driven cars - not race cars. If you want performance you can still get it through spring and shock combos, but you can't expect the springs to be something they're not. If you want performance you need stiffer rate springs, which have to be specially ordered. You can get them through Kings or pretty much any manufacturer of springs and from memory they were 250-300 for the pair, you just have to ask for a custom spring rate and they ask you how stiff you're looking at and what you're going to use them for.

Most of the VW guys who are serious about track work are using spring/shock setups because they can tune them to handle better than coilovers. Going to proper adjustable Koni/Bilstein shocks and custom H&R, Eibach, etc. springs can provide awesome handling. Base level coilovers provide good handling and tuning options - not great. They're good handling for the price, but can also be too harsh for a lot of everyday drivers. If you want fantastic handling options and adjustable height you need to spend 2500 upwards on a set.

Ask yourself what you want from a set, if you want to be able to move the height of your car up and down to where you want it, by all means pay the money for coilovers. If you just want to drop your car for cheap, chuck some king springs or Lovells in it.
