DIY: E4-9 Short shift install

i dont drink ne-more, but i'll help u out free, cos im always keen to help out

Nice write up! I installed a similar unit. I put the blue metal bushes under the unit rather than in it. And I had to re-use the existing white caps that sit on the original shifter as the ones supplied were too big! But I also rotated mine around so that in neutral the shifter is pointing straight up rather than angled. :)

yey, with the blue bushes i figured it didnt matter too much wether they were under or above, i put above so they are more visable for coolness and so they didnt raise the shift support an extra 10mm, my white caps were the right size and i think yours should have been too, i think its just because they are new, i compared the 2 and my old ones had more of a roundness to the end rather than an angle, but i got them on fine, so they do fit, yeh im going to re angle mine when my new shifter arrives, so it kinks back towards the rear of the car so u dont have to reach as far forward

update on shifter adjustability;
you can adjust the pivot point ball joint for CE's (may differ for other cars)........ but if you do you cannot actually get into 1st or 2nd :roll:
this is due to the stiffness of the shift connection cables. just doesnt work, you can however rotate the ball joint so that the stem kinks in the direction most confortable for you

the weight is fully adjustable you can put it just about anywhere even if there is no dimple to grub into i still sucessfully got it on firmly with no trouble

so i bought this short shifter! whats up with those 4 black washers, did your short shifter come with them?
i no they go down where the bushings are located at the base of the support, but do they go inbewtween the bushing and the screw or the bushing and the plastic base?

I put mine in between the bolt and the bushing, so they was no metal on metal contact. If that's the right or not i don't know, but it seemed logical to me.
Something like this;

Bolt => Washer => Bushing => Shifter base => Floor pan

Random question on this Res. Can you get the shifter to point straight up and down like how the original one sits ??? Should be ordering mine this week if you're still keen :)

yeh u just rotate it so the kink angles back, which makes it basically straight up and down

i'll be honest i have no idea what kind of grease i used, the label came off many 10's of years ago maybe before i was born
my grease keeps getting gummed up with dirt and crap so i change it every 6months or year

dont quote matty on this, as its from my quite poor memory, but i believe he said use rubber grease?

So I took my console bits and all that to try and adjust the weight. Got the grub screw out and it didn't move... Any thoughts on this ??? Contemplating taking a hammer to it and seeing if I can get it to budge.

There's 2 grub screws, one behind the other. Did you get both out?
Don't ues a hammer you'll break it...
