ok, so this is my first DIY so i took lots of pics
i was really over the whole chrome look, its ghastly imho
ima take no responsibility if you try this and stuff it up, buts its easy and i have faith ;)
Tools i used. Kinchrome shifter, phillips screwdriver, fork, silicone/sealant, black spraypaint, masking tape

original tail light
photo0152pb.jpg

start by removing the bulbs (simple twist out) and then remove the 3x10mm nuts holding in the tail lights (last bold hidden by wood from amp mount)
photo0153g.jpg

then just slide out the tail light
photo0155q.jpg

now there are 3x phillips screws you must undo and the 3 bolts (you prolly dont have to take out the bolts, but i did) while your doing this, preheat oven to around 100'c
photo0157.jpg

i used the fork to lever out the screws because of the silicone/glue holding them in
photo0158c.jpg

place tail light in over for a few min, check regularly (or until golden brown ;) ) (remember once you finished with the oven, leave the door open for it to breathe, to get that plastic smell/taste out)
photo0159g.jpg

now, slowly and carefully start to pry open the tail light, but there are 2x clips that you must be aware of, BE GENTLE! if its still to hard, place it back in the oven, i used the fork to help pry open the cover
photo0163x.jpg

with a bit of struggle the cover eventually came off (and remember, dont leave the oven unattended and once your done ensure you turn it off!)
photo0167y.jpg

now you can start masking over the light covers, i chose to keep a chrome ring around the light covers
photo0172zd.jpg

now clean the surface, either using a green kitchen scourer or 1500-2000grit sand paper, then clean the surface (i used meths) and i used the fork to scrape out the old silicone
photo0170.jpg

now spray desired colors and wait till it dries properly, a few coats will be required, and dont rush the spraying, take your time and nice even coats, but dont do what i did and spray against the side of the house (face palm) lay carboard behind or something
photo0173y.jpg

almost done! i used meths and a soft cloth to clean off the residue from the masking tape and it came out nice
photo0175g.jpg

apply new sealant/glue and replace the cover and replace the 3xphillips screws and 3x bolts (place some weights on top of the light to put pressure on the lights to close it properly)
photo0179t.jpg

reattach to the car and make sure you have replace the 3x10mm nuts and bulbs accordingly, and then admire your handy work! (cleaned my car as requested by tryg :p )

good write up, will it matter if you use a socket over the wrench??? what size fork???

Truly nice write up, good disclaimer too!

Very nice result, could've washed the car for the final pic though!!!!!

yeh, that actually is a crack, hence why i stated a few times to be super careful, mine was just due to ignorance, but i think my mate has a spare cover i can flog, so im not too fussed,
hopefully people will be able to learn from my mistakes
and yeh i could of washed my car, but its due for rain 2day/2nite so i didnt bother too much :p when the cars clean i will replace that last image ;)

cesaro, did u think of getting the paint colour made up for ur can and paint them the colour so it looks liek it is morphed into the body

yeh, i got it all planned out, when i get my new front bar sprayed, im gonna get the tail lights resprayed at the same time, this whole black thing was just to do me until then
and gonna get my rims sprayed at the same time, get it all done at once

nice write up. look exactly like mine now haha.

theres a "diy" on how to do em on my thread haha.

oh and y did u scrape away the old silicon? u realise now that they will fog up when it rains :(

he didnt say he put new silicon in... also. if he uses a different type of silicon to replace the old one, he wont be able to open them up ever again... :S

second last step, "apply new sealant/glue" i didnt put silicon, but same diff
i used some good stuff, sellys something, its pretty much the same that was on ther before

hopefully i wont need to open them for ages anyway,
but im sure if i do have to it wont be too hard, and if i get super cranky at it, i will just buy new ones :p

cleaned my car and updated that last pic as requested by tryg :p

gotta admit it looks so much nicer over the old crappy chrome, im now thinkin of spraying a little bit of that tint stuff on, not a lot, just a little bit to make it darker
