starting up issues

so lately when i start the car in the morning it literally has no go, i touch the throttle and it drops revs suddenly and has nothing, i have to let it sit at idle for a good 5mins before i can actually drive. once the motor is warm its fine its just this starting up period where it struggles, i live in QLD so the weather isnt that cold do begin with.. is this normal??

cheers :)

i read somewhere about a similar issue, it mightv been on here actully, or maybe MCA have a look thru the forum and you might find it :)

well iv checked spark plugs and they are relatively clean and the head isnt rounded. the mitsubishi manual says to use NGK - BP5ES-11 but according to the NGK manual they say to use BPR5ES-11 which i currently have in the car. iv also just filled up the car with premium unleaded just last week to see what gains/losses it provides but i wouldnt think this would be causing the issue, havent checked the fuel filter tho :S

ill check it out and see what i can find thanks.

I'd be thinking electronics... possibly. Something to do with MAF maybe? IDK, take it to a mechanic tbh.

sounds like throttle body is stuffed, take it to ur local mechanic and he will sort it out for u.

would installing the "RPW Phenolic 46mm Throttle Body Insulator Block" have anything to do with it seeing as the gasket is a good few mm's thicker then the standard gasket.

did the problem start just after the installation?

i installed the extractors and this thermo block at the same time and i highly doubt it would be caused by the extractors so to answer your question it did get worse after installing it. I removed it this morning and used a gasket sealant instead as i dont have a spare paper gasket that was in there before and on start-up it seemed to have improved slightly, i will see how it goes again this arvo..

did the idle go up aswell? was it PERFECT when it was warmed up? sounds like it was a poor fit and leaking and when it heated up it might of expanded to fit better... wouldent be headers unless you forgot to resinstall your o2 sensor? something when you installed them and didnt put them back.

yeah once warmed up the idle was fine, definitely not headers cause i installed them correctly.

sounds like get rid of whatever you put on the throttle body and get a new paper gasket for it because throttle bodys are pretty narrow where they mount and using sealant isnt a good idea you may block the Idle controll valve and bypass passages.

and what is the thermoblock, just a plastic spacer for the throttle body to stop it transferring heat from the intake manifold to the throttle body? sounds pontless to me. considering the air will get heated up by the intake manifold before it enters the combustion cylinders anyway.. lol

but RPW is now a member here im sure they will chime in once reading this thread

it appears to be some sort of composite material that apparently draws away hot air that comes through the throttle body, but like you said it does seem quite pointless. ill go out and grab a paper gasket asap.

is your throttle body 46mm? that could also be a problem for flow if it is narrower / wider. i have one coming for my intake manifold which stops the heat transfer between the head and the intake manifold, but i honestly just bought it because it was cheaper then the OEM gasket.

Just keep us updated if it gets any better

i havent actually measured it, which in the first place was probably a newb mistake. its stock so im guessing that its not 46mm..

will do.

i just read the full article and says its for the stock 4g15 tb, if thats what you have then you'r laughin.

by the looks of it im pretty sure iv got the stock tb. if the problem still remains when i start it up its obviously a deeper issue. :/

yeah its a weird thing that it comes good after it warms up... i assume that can be the only problem a vac leak before it warms up because a poor fitting gasket or bad installation

vac leak would be a good spot to look, had same problem with BMW but fixed it once i realised that the head breather pipe coming out of top of head was not connected to the intake

so i took the tb apart last night and cleaned it and re-installed the RPW gasket seeing as its the right fit for it, i also took a look at the idle sensor and tried turning the idle up a slight bit which did seem to imrpove when starting up, originally it was idling around 800rpm and i turned it up to 900-1000. the issue still persists but not as bad as before. i checked all vac hoses and other connections and it all appears to be fine, the only other thing i can think of is that this issue popped up as soon as i filled the car with premium fuel :S im gonna run it down and then fill up with standard unleaded and see how that goes.
