but I can never drive a manual as a daily
Why

Before proceeding, note: I might as well be Australia's laziest driver!
To answer your question, here's my well thought out answer...

..well mainly I just want to 'cruise' from A to B with minimal effort. On days when you're buggered after a tiring day I don't know about you but I certainly dont want to be moving any other limbs apart from the minimum to get me home or where ever.

Some might say just catch cab or public transport. Cab's are a rip-off and Sydney's public transport doesn't rate very well with me though I am forced to use it for uni.

As I said earlier, I don't mind driving manual but most days I just couldn't be bothered. I prefer cruising, bit like the Stig but on Lanceroids. :D

I see a lot of people saying that you don't feel the changes/connection to the car as much in an auto, I feel the complete opposite. You know how you all swap out your manual window winders for power windows? That's how I feel about auto's over manuals. Does the work for you, no fiddly shiet needed = better. And about not being able to control the gear you're in, that's a load of bull too. Foot to the floor and you'll change back a gear or two just like you can in a manual. if you don't feel the same power, you;re not doing it properly, so you shouldn't be in an auto anyway. Wahh wahh you lose more power at the fly, who gives a shiet. It's what, an extra 10% if that? In a Lancer that's like 0.5kw, whoop dee doo Basil!

I bloody hate my 1.5 Auto. It sucks a big one. Wont down shift fast enough while going up hill, wont up shift after the hill either and revs the crap out of the engine before up changing.
I cant wait to get rid of the auto gearbox.

Auto's should not be in small engine cars!

That is exactly what I mean by not being able to control what gear the car is in rigby, never changes when you want it to. autos just suck big fat ones basically.

Well said rigby. Auto requires precision during acceleration which compensates for the gear changes in manual. Enough said

Yeah 1.5 Auto can be bit of a challenge. On the other hand I have no problem with shifting in my auto although it is a 2.4L Mivec. It pulls when you want it to, hill or no hill. Like I said above, with auto it is all about how you drive the car in terms of acceleration mainly.

I Use to think Manual was better but since driving auto I don't think I'd want to drive manual. Just easier and lazier I guess.

One car with a *poo* auto != all autos are *poo*

Tell us that again when you sit in an hour and a half of peak hour traffic each way every day.

well, i've driven a few different auto cars and they all feel the same. just hate the auto feeling. so in MY opinion yea, all autos are *poo*!

Remember after all this is a forum and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I sit in 45 min to 1hr of peak hour traffic with a manual, everyday, no issues

Jazza, sit your ass in a friends Golf R32, any VDub with a DSG gearbox, or a decent car with a good gearbox, and then tell me the auto is slow.. 60-100kmph and by the time you realise you're doing 130kms, you remember the gearbox has changed gears about 4 times already. New Auto boxes can change gears sooo quickly these days - its just that it doesnt always do it when you want it too

That being said, auto's suck haha, <3 the gearstick

Remember with auto you can still change to a lower gear manually. A trick my teacher told me when i was driving his 1.6 litre Laser was to put it back to 2nd when going up hills so it doesnt jump around the gears.... just remember to put it back in drive. lol

After driving manual for a while, it almost becomes automatic anyway. You hardly realise when your shifting ect.. and it really doesnt cause any problems in stop start traffic.

hate auto. manual little cars are awesome. the car marty from MCM drives, what is it 1.3l daihatsu, can still flog it in second all day and use no fuel.

that and I only recently learnt how a torque converter works, and it seems soooo weird (engineering wise) compared to clutch + flywheel
