Indicators

Ummmm yea - ok?? I thought the purpose of this forum was to communicate with other Lancer owners, share ideas, and ask questions - not to be a douche.

Since this is apaprently a common problem with any model vehicle which uses the old indicator stalk part I'm sure peopler would be interested to know about a site I found...they do the stalk + shipping to Australia for only $113 brand new genuine part.... part 8614A002 - this is the new part that apparently won't break.

Enjoy!

That's bad karma man it'll haunt you.. You didn't listen to ppl advice when you started this thread so why dig it up now cause i doubt anyone cares.
And remember bad karma man= bad life. Eg hit and run, its already started.

You are way out of line buddy, you don't need to start running your mouth. Keep your opionated mind to yourself.

And yes this website is for asking questions to fellow lancer owners. Don't worry about some small minded individuals that have nothing better to do than troll then internet. I haven't had this problem on my car as yet (touchwood). But that price seems pretty reasonable.

like your work sladey...bookmark the website just in case!

The same part straight from a local Mitsubishi dealer is $260....from the wreckers they want $100 for a second hand one that will more than likely also develop problems.

$100 for a headlight/indicator stalk? Still seems a bit much to me. I paid $40 for a second hand wiper stalk and the indicator one was the same price.

Thats just how much these ones are - supply and demand.......

What a relief to find this thread.
My wifes lancer is playing up as described, with her "get home safe" cure being to hold the stalk down for right and up for left.
Not sure of the actual model, its built mid 2005 I reckon and the front looks like dingle86's picture.
So I guess the switch will come out the same - loosen the covers and unclip it? I wasn't looking forward to trying to disconnect the airbag and take the wheel of, that's for sure.
The other question is, has anyone actually bought a switch from the amayama.com website? That is a very good price, I'm keen to know if that part number actually supplied a switch for a right hand drive car.
That's been the hardest part of my international search for parts - these beaut little cars have been sold all over the world, and its tricky making sure you get parts for RHD.
Any advice you can give will be much appreciated.
With a missus, three kids, 10 chooks, a cat (don't ask - it seemed like a good idea at the time), and a motorcycle habit to support, I try to do the simpler stuff myself.
My mechanic mate will be doing the timing belt though :).
Regards,
Mick
P.S, has anyone tried any of the spray on contact cleaners?

Hey Mick welcome to the club - it is the 2005 model that seems to be having this problem, I have sprayed on contact cleaner and that did not work (not for long) I think you have to get one that is suitable for the MIVEC specificlly (cruise control switch?)I have a 2lt CH one here from a2005 model and they are two different setups...

look on your local gumtree and see if they will work the US verssion will not as there indicator is on the left of steering wheel..

Hey Mick,

Glad the info has helped you out. Just ring up one of the Mitsubishi dealers parts department and give them the VIN number. Just say you need to know the part number for the indicator stalk. I think the mid year 2005 CH model was the 2L version.

Once you have the part number just go to the amayama website and fill out and enquiry - they ask what type of car you have and what not to make sure the part fits (and yes it will be for a right hand drive as you have to select what country you are in). Once you receive the quote for the part and shipping you can then proceed with the order. It does take a little while for them to ship it however as they have to receive payment, order the part from their suppliers, then once received, send the part to Australia from Japan.

Changing it is as easy as unscrewing the 3 screws that hold the plastics covers on surrounding the steering wheel - unclipping the stalk assembly and inserting the new one.

Let me know if you need any help with anything.

Thanks chaps.
Mine is a 2 litre car, so I guess I've got the one that has the problem. Nice car, factory spoiler and nice aftermarket mags.

I didn't check (never occurred to me) but I suppose they'll take Paypal.
At least its easier than I thought it was gunna be, my heart sank when I pulled this little cover off the rear underside of the wheel itself, saw a couple of plugs and a warning sticker about the air bag.
Gotta luv internet shopping. Recently some scumbag in the city passed so close to the car they took the driver's mirror out. It looked like I only needed a glass. $75 aftermarket from Autopro, $25 from a bloke in England.
I do hope our local people don't completely price themselves out of business.

Indicator switch aside, these Lancers really are the pick of the small cars, in my opinion. This thing has only done 68,000 now, 58,000 when we bought it. We went down in size from a 97 falcon on gas. I was prepared to miss the gas car. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a trip to the city (240km each way) costs about the same, and is just as comfortable.
When we were looking, we test drove a Nissan pulsar and a Chrysler PT Cruiser of the same year. The Pulsar had less k's than the Lancer. What a crap box. Slow (1.8L) and very road noisy, tinny by comparison. The Crusier was nice, but their rep is terrible.I've got a mate who owns one and he says the around town fuel is crippling. still mighta bought it, but the missus really struggled with the manual gearbox, and I had visions of needing a clutch and engine mounts before she got the hang of it. :)
So the Lancer shaped up as the best, including room in the rear for my teenage kids.

Regards,
Mick

P.S. that price of $100 or so is really very good. There is a new one listed on Ebay for $220, and I remember paying $90 for a VK commodore one way back in the day.

Hi all,
My car is doing the same thing.
My indciator decides to work sometimes and now my head lights are flickering and turning on and off.
When they turn off i just turn them off on the steering wheen and then re-turn them on and they go fine for a while and then flicker.
It all started with my indicator.
Has anyone got any proven solutions??
Hopefully you can help me.
:)

hey Martini, head to the website i mentioned and buy the part..its $113 and takes 12 days to get to you

HELLO ALL! i am so glad i found you on here .... because this is exactly happening too me and it is very scary and dangerous
being single and not so knowlegable on cars, i was just told to "get a new one" and so i am very releived to have found this thread, and know i am not the only one that has this problem!!
i will head to that website and have a look .. thankyou :D

has everyone who has gone on there had sucess ?? i drive a Mitusbishi Lancer, stationwagon, 2005 (white hahahaha) so this should be ok yeah ??
... think i might get more details before heading on there ;)

Hey Angie,

Just ring your local Mitsu dealer and give them the VIN number. Say you need the part number for the Indicator stalk/switch. Then just plug that number into the website and it will give you the price. If it is the 8614A002, then it should only take about 10 days for shipping and should cost about $115 max.

Once you get that far, all you need is a phillips head screw driver - about 20 cm long - undo the 3 screws and simply unclip the old stalk and clip in the new one.

Thanks, Pat

Hey Guys!

Made an account purely to post a solution to this issue.

I followed the advice of this thread (opened the steering column up, and removed the indicator stalk) and took apart the indicator assembly to clean the contacts. However, when I put the unit back together and tested it out the problem was still occuring.

After doing the same process a few times (and getting a little frustrated), I decided the problem was not in the stalk assembly itself. I placed the stalk back into the slot on the steering column (without replacing the plastic housing) and took note of slight movements of the whole indicator housing each time I moved the stalk up and down.

Then it hit me. The problem was not with the internal contacts of the stalk assembly, but the 10 or 12 little contacts (pins) that seat into the indicator assembly housing on the steering column.

Living in Cyprus, the inside of the car gets very hot when parked (and I imagine the same in Aus!!). My suspicion is that, mixed with the heat of the dashboard and the wiggling of the indicator assembly in its housing each time we are signalling, the pins are moving/weakening and causing intermittent contact (which supports the symptom of why pushing the indicator firmly in one direction sometimes makes it work).

I held the indicator housing in front of me as it would sit facing me if installed its correct position. From that angle, the pins should be on the left hand side of the assembly.

With a flat headed screwdriver, bend the pins EVER SO SLIGHTLY away from your body. You will find the you have to give it a wiggle and be a little forceful when reseating the assembly back into the steering column (I had to adjust how much I had bent the pins before it finally went back in).

Now the pins are firmly connected inside the steering column and the whole thing seems to be working fine!

I really hope this works out for someone else, as it just saved me £100. (and potentially my life!)

If I haven't made sense with this post or there is any consfusion just let me know, I'll be happy to help.

EXCELLENT !! thank you so much for sharing... I have a spare dodgey one lying around so will have a look at what you are saying and see if it is the same for us... cant imagine why it wouldnt be the same everywhere.

again thank you for a great post.

Hi Guys,

Total car noob here, but have been experiencing the same problem with the indicator + headlights on my CH (sometimes having to hold the entire switch forward to keep the lights on when they're not playing nice).

Is it as simple as said above to fix, that anyone could do it (keeping in mind I'm not very knowledgable about cars and haven't really had to change anything with mine before)? The cost of giving it a go sure beats the quote I was given by one place to fix the problem.

Also, has anyone had any luck with the suggestion from Rizzix? I ask as he made a point about the heat possibly playing a part in it, and I certainly noticed that the problem is more prevalent during Perth's hotter days.

Hi Everyone,

So glad I finally found this thread as i've been having the exact same issue with my 2005 CH lancer.

How did you go Steeb - did you end up trying the fix from Rizzix or order a new part? I've put in an enquiry for the part (awaiting the quote) but thought i'd try Rizzix's suggestion first. I also called the local Mits dealership and they have said they have never heard of the problem, and want $105 + tax per hour to diagnose the fault (said it would take 30 mins of there abouts).

The issue always occurs on a warm day here in QLD (never in the mornings) - to get it to work I push the switch forward - but thats not good now its getting darker earlier and you have to do so the same when the headlights turn off as you are driving along
