Indicators

Has anyone had any indicator troubles in the CH?

Sometimes I can put on the indicator and it works fine. Other times it turns off by itself and then spasms on and off. It doesnt matter if I am moving, turning, or just sitting still with the engine on. I found that if I hold it down/up it stays on with the pressure.

I can only gather that it isnt contacting properly as the hazards work all the time.

Have ordered a working stalk from the wreckers so will see if that fixes it but wanted to see if anyone else has had the problem?

That leads me to my next point - has anyone got a walkthrough on how to change over the stalk? Don't want to pop the airbag in my face by doing the wrong thing.

THIS IS HAPPENING TO ME NOW!!!
its the indicator stalk.

to change it,

in that groove where that metal thing is to change steering wheel height is 2 screws, undo them.
on the right nearer to the back is a hole with a screw about 5-10 cm deep inside it. undo that.
now put something between the plastic casing and the little square the indicator comes out of and push, seperating the two bits
take off the top bit and you should see the black box for the indicator stalk. there are two clips on either side, one top, one bottom you push in and the you have to pull it out. you have to be a bit forceful.
then slot the new one in, put it back together and you should be set hopefully.

Thanks Jeffaz......I am assuming you don't have an airbag? I am happy with pulling things apart...just want to make sure that the airbag doesnt go off.

So installing the new stalk fixed this for you?? I hope so - would be another thing crossed off my list!!!

disconnect batery before playing with airbags

so just disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes and then start pulling things off? I'm assuming this will stop the air bag going off...?

Disconecting the battery doe not stop airbags from going off a they have a capacitance charge to them, and yeah the indicator problem will most likely be your switch man, if your handy with tools pull apart the switch and clean the contacts if there not pitted to bad, otherwise replacing it willdo the job :)

the switch? ive never done anything with the stalks or what not in my lancer...was easy to do without an airbag in my old VR Commodore..is the switch what makes contact at the end of the stalk in order to make it "click"?

I do have an airbag but youre not messing with it, just the plastic crap behind it. If you only play with the indicator switch then youll be fine.

wait why is airbags even brought up? lol isnt this about indicators? yeah man, just take your indicator switch out and take it apart :)

sweet...was just wrapping my head around it...didnt want to accidently activate the air bag by messing around with stuff in that area......I will see how I go via Jeffaz little walk through.....thanks all for your help...

true, disconnet battery before disconnecting airbag module

hey guys funny this is coming up now - I was just talking to my local Mitsi dealer and this is a common problem with the indicators failing and it is covered under warranty... otherwise the part is going to cost you nearly $200 for just the indicator... I was lucky I had one lying around here from the wreck and used that...
The swap is very easy just remove the plastic covers from the steering column and then unclip the inndicator just simply slides in and out approx 15minute job and that is including finding a screw driver.
but remember these cars were under 5 year warranty so I would just go to dealer and get them to replace with brand new one - these cars came out in October 2005...(MIVEC)

lol @ chowetime.....a 5 year warranty on an October 2005 ran out a year ago???

pretty sure i fixed the problem without having to replace the stalk....just took off the plastic cover and pulled the stalk out (disconnected the battery obviously)...gave the connections a wipe and re-seated it....seems to have fixed the problem......easy 15 minute job...

fyi - a wreckers wanted $100 for the stalk.....so i said F that and fixed it myself...

Your problem will come back. Trust me. I had kept doing that for 6 months before I said *fudge* it and replaced the whole thing.

oh really...thats a bit crap then....hopefully mine is nice to me........its nice to be able to indicate again.....

so what year is your MIVEC...like I said the part is under warranty if your car is under the 5 year old

december 2005, so it is coming on 6 years now.........cleaning the terminals fixed it for a week and now its starting to F up again.......how much is it for a new one??

Expensive. But try a wreckers maybe??? And grab a couple if they're cheap and have heaps.

someone decided to come around a corner too quick and do a hit and run on the front end of my car.....told the repairer that the indicators aren't working properly.....here's hoping its part of the fix!!!

That's bad karma man it'll haunt you.. You didn't listen to ppl advice when you started this thread so why dig it up now cause i doubt anyone cares. :lolno:
And remember bad karma man= bad life. Eg hit and run, its already started.
