Exhaust Options

I might see if its possible to get the rest of the catback (minus the muffler) done afterwards if I dislike the sound of the muffler by itself. Might not be possible but worth asking.

for a 4g15 i would recommend 2inch mandrel
for a 4g93 i would recommend 2inch mandrel or 2.25inch mandrel. 2inch is still larger than stock so you are still increasing tube diameter but retaining but pipe radius in the bends as well due to using mandrel bends.
be aware a poor quality press bent system is quite bad and perhaps not money well spent considering a lot of pipe is squashed during bends.
2.5inch is not really required unless going turbo and beyond or non turbo to make around 110kw at the wheels or more (on these front wheel drive cars)

changing the rear muffler to a straight trhough design should pickup no more than 2kw depending on the which of the Mirage/Lancer you have

So hopefully booking in/getting it done tomorrow, still making up my mind on the setup I want.
Parents think I should go for the catback system (which is not what I expected them to support) and most friends do, but I'm still not sure.
Also before risking embarrassing myself at the exhaust place, is it AT ALL possible to put on a muffler, then later add the bits between the cat and the muffler?

if the muffler needs to be welded on, then it'll be harder done the track to add bits, i'd say, go for catback 2 or 2 1/4 and get a resonator and muffler to help keep it sound cool but not overly loud.

if ur going to do it, do it all the 1st time, otherwise each time u go back to add little bits ur having to pay more and more in labour, cos they have to cut and weld again

It's doable. I did that exact path.

I first got a muffler when I started with my exhaust, and to do that they unbolt the standard one and bolt up the new one the has a flange to match existing piping.

See that your muffler will be larger piping and on a flange, to do the rest of the exhaust all they have to do is line the new piping up to the flange with no cutting or welding.

Okay, I'm getting the muffler done at 2:30 today, and the guys have told me that should I not like the sound I can come in and add the rest of the piping to make it the same catback system, adding a resonator as well if I wanted. So i'll let you guys know how it sounds at roughly 3-4.

Remember it needs time to bed in.

When I had mine done it was slightly louder than stock, I could actually hear it get louder and louder as the day went on, after a week or so it stopped getting louder.

tl;dr version: give it a week before you go back and ask them to make changes

VROOOOOOOOOM

But srs, yeah I got it all done, nice deep tone, fairly loud, doesn't seem to drone much at all, and they reused my old tip (so no extra price for new tip) and its all good.
Dave, I was planning on talking to them like weeks after if I didn't like it anyways, but I think this will be fine for most purposes.
In all honesty, the person most impressed was my dad, who took it out for a spin and enjoyed the sound, as well as spinning the wheels out of second and whatnot...

So yeah thanks everyone for their help, mods can lock/delete this thread if you want (maybe res or nice as or someone wants to filter through the s*** and find some info for an exhaust info thread for ce's if they wanted).

For anyone else, do as above.

As well as go for a 16inch long hotdog resonator
Fit the largest muffler you can underneath the back
Go for a 2.5 to a 3inch tip size for a nice sound
A larger tip will just amplify the noise and give a deeper note.

Any reason for the largest muffler Henry?

My muffler is fairly small, especially compared to what it replaced.

ok my experience

i have a 2 1/4 cat back with an after market muffler (not a cannon) ill have to check what kind but it gives a really good humming sound..
and i know a person i work with ahs a 1.5 lancer with a 2.5 all the way through and it crackles and pings and sounds like a lawnmower.. and she says her fuel economy has suffered noticably..(her boyfriend put it on the car lol)
my brother has a mirage with just an end on.. and u can only just notice its a tad louder when its warm.. my experience with them is 2 1/4 is the happy spot

Ah, I have a 2" cat back, no resonator, cannon on the back. It sounds nice, and very loud. There's a little bit of rattle on start-up and when you rev it, but only before the engine warms up. By the time I get ~500m from home it sounds very nice. I also get a lot of comments on the tone it puts out! :)

My setup cost $520 or so, but the majority of it was in labour. It took longer than usual to get it custom made and set up, because I have my system "flanged up", so I can simply unbolt it at either the cat or just before the muffler, if I happen to get an EPA notice. I thought this was a great idea, and well worth the extra few bucks to get it done. Cannon cost me $160. Its a proper one, not a thin piece of sh*t Chinese made cannon you can purchase at Autobarn or Repco for $70...

the main reason people complain about having a *poo* exhaust note: the rear muffler. go cheap and expect a dirty as sound.

just for reference, my exhaust ended up costing my about $2000 (3" full stainless, turbos back, custom front pipes, metal cat and a stainless lukey muffer [about $450 just for that]) and it was defintely worth it

so at the end of the day, if you go to an exhaust shop to get a catback, ask what muffler you are getting and how much its worth. the price of piping doesnt change, but the price for the quality of the job does, and the same goes for parts used, aka tips, resonators and mufflers.

sorry for digging up an old thread but i would rather ask here then start a new thread.

got my hands on this 2" redback front section, supposedly its brand new and never been installed on a car.
just need to confirm i will need the 2" rear section before i can get this installed?
and this isnt a high flow cat back is it? i cant get under my car to compare it to my stock one. or just go an an exhaust with a high flow cat?

what's peoples opinions on a straight through exhausts on a lancer?? so no cannon/muffler etc.
very loud

im running a hot dog at the end (no muffler) and it has left the most annoying drone sound in the back of my skull over the past 2 years
i cant wait till i get a quiet muffler with a little rumble
