Custom iPhone dock/AUX input

well im going to start a DIY iPhone dock in my CH using AUX input on the headunit, simmilar to DR1FT's ipod one but better :p

the plan
buy:
-cheap ass dock - http://cgi.ebay.com/Dock-Charger-US...856264?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2eb21ec3c8
- 1M long AUX cable
- 1M long apple USB cable

1.drill hole in centre console( where arm rest is on VRX model) run the cables thru the console all the way up to behind the dash
2.connect usb to ciggy lighter power (somehow)
3. aux coming out from the corner of the headunit and into the AUX jack

so bascally it plays and charges my iphone and keeps it stored and not rattling around while driving.

im sure the aux will be fine, just anyone care to advise me on how to concet the usb to the 12V ciggy? but form the inside so its not actually using the socket (hidden)?
thanks :D , il post up a DIY if i go thru with it for fellow CG/CH owners.

im pretty sure USB ports are all about 5 volts, whereas a ciggy lighter is 12v. best to double check the USB power though, and look up on how to mod USB ports and whatnot for conversions and that :)
Goodluck with the DIY, sounds promising

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out, since I depend on my usb more for music in the car.

Buy something like a cigarette socket double adaptor where they have the two separate wired sockets, cut one off and solder it to the existing cigarette socket's harness under the centre console. That would be the easiest and most crude way of doing it....

what ryan said, i have a 4 plugger behind my dash that is hardwired to the back of the origonal cig lighter, saves alot of trouble swapping stuff in and out, while keeping it neat

i can see why u are doing what ur doing, but really if i were u i would want the whole thing controlled by my head deck and not have to touch the ipod
but i guess if u do it cheap and u need something to occupy urself with then go ahead

but, i dunno about ur state but its illegal to use an ipod while driving in QLD (as with any other hand held device)

is it going to stand upright while u drive? Seems a little unstable. It'd be cool if you could secure it somewhere, i.e. have the ipod wedged snugly between pieces of rubber or something

he said he connected his with USB so he can control it with the headunit.. but where does it conncet if the USB port is on the front of the stereo?.

my head unit controls the ipod. so all i did was use the exsiting cable and make my dock from there. here's a video slightly showing you

Could be like the Alpines which have the USB connector on a short fly-lead coming out of the rear of the deck....

u need a HU that can control it to start with, newer HU's have ipod cables that go to a round 6-10 pin connector that has data/power charging and control over ur ipod
if urs does not ahve this cable u cant do it

standard usb->ipod isnt compatible as far as i have tested and seen

okay, okay.. how is it connected? i see an empty AUX slot and no usb..

bascally im asking is it conceted to the back of the headunit? is there ports and *poo* on the back? cuz im a car audio noob (first car interior mod ever..) cuz i want all the cables hidden, going under the dash, not going all over the place near the gear shifter.

well u would have to take ur HU out and check if yours has it ,coz not all HU's have the same ports at the back for aux/usb/ipod/vga

if urs has aux or usb at the front then its very unlikely it will also have them behind

there's a seperate cable going to the back of my headunit, it works different to an aux cable lol

We'd need to know what deck you have...ie brand and model #.

Depends on the brand. Alpines have a standard USB that can accept a USB stick or iPod aswell as a optional "High-Speed" iPod cable that connects via a round plug.

My Pioneer AVIC on the other hand uses the USB port to power and control the iPod but feeds the audio (and video) signals back to the head deck via RCA 9it comes with a special iPod harness to do so...

Oh and the Sony's I've seen you just use a normal iPod USB cable to plug it in via the port on the front of the deck....

well i havnt actully bought it yet. its chrissy present from dad going out to look at em today, i like the sony ones and there pretty good price. cuz if i get a cheaper headunit then he will give me more money towards my turbo build :)

well in that case im thinkin il do my origonal plan but get a headunit with usb instead of just AUX.

make sure it says ipod compatible or whatever, dont wanna buy it get home and realise it wont work out
