CJ Owners - Tyres that you recommend?

Guys,
I know this has been all done before, but it might pay to post up your experiences with tyres. People will be coming up to tyre changes shortly, in CJs.

I am still on stock Yoko Advans and am likely to put money on either Toyo Proxes 4 or Kumho KU31.

Advice?

Had Kumho KU31, nice cheap tyre but dont get the super cheap grey imports. I got a set from Tempe Tyres with my previous rims and they started shredding strips of rubber from the side of the rears (no they weren't scrubbing out at all on the body). According to my local Kumho dealer (who is a family friend) not only do the grey imports use a rubber designed for say colder European climates, they also use a narrower steel band. This increases turn in grip but in Australia with our hotter climate it causes overheating in the tyre...

I've actually got KU21s now, a bit less grip compared to the KU31s (not by much) but they are a bit of a harder wearing rubber and HEAPS quieter. Basically if you want grip go KU31, if you want a quieter 'touring' tyre go for the KU21s.

Not sure how they compare to Proxes, but I previously had Bridgestone Adrenalins and they had a fair bit more grip. Only problem is they are like 50-70% dearer and wear out quicker because they are a much softer rubber, so given that I will say the Kumhos are a pretty good bang for buck tyre!

Id stay away from proxes 4s, i have a mate who had them put on his car for free and he says he wouldn't wish them onto an enemy they are that shocking. also another person said his car hooked up better on 50 dollar budget tyres at WSID compared to proxes 4s.

but then again if you are just after regular road going tyres they could be fine, but take the T1R or KU31 over them any day

Thanks Ryan and Dave.. I will give the KU21's a look.

Thanks Royzie.. I have used Proxes 1 in the past, found them to be superior to most tyres.. Maybe Proxes 4 are not as good, but Toyo are not junk.

Keep in mind this is being compared to "nearly semi slicks" as i call them.. Apples and oranges now that I've read back through it...

.

Did you end up with this tyre?

Im looking for new tyres since my dont grip at all and pretty much cannot drive the car in the wet at all.

Question, are you still running your 18's? Are they the stock Yoko Advans? Because as they get low on rubber, they get quite slippy...

I am getting Goodyear F1, for $750, if I am fortunate.. but thanks for the help. I like the KU21s because they are non-directional, where as most these days will only live on one side of the car etc...

yup still got 18's with stock wheels on the rear (so far done 47,000km on them) and cooper tyres on the front (about 40,000km) money isn't the issue but ive recently join a car club where i need decent tyres where the car will not slide everywhere like it does now

Well the only tyres truely good for street and track are the likes of Kumho KU36, Bridgestone Adrenalins, etc. Dont expect to get much more than 20,000km out of them if you are pushing it and the Bridgestones in particular are around $400 each and you will have to go something like a 225/40

maxxis, was told by lots of places these drive the same ifnot better then ku31 but out last the kumho. $250 each tho

I have heard good things about Maxxis too... even with motorcycle and bicycle tyres... worth a look.

I might have found a deal under $800 for Dunlop F1... not sure how old the stock is.. worth having a look.

well on that tambo criuse all them boys (even the 4g15) talkin bout loss of traction and i never once lost traction and was pushing hard

haha, not that I have big power, but I am sure all will agree that I was pushing hard that day... all that on those 'crappy' Yokohama Advans....!

If you got 18"s you could try Takuma Avanza Sport. I had them before it came to changing my tyres. They lasted about 42k-44k and only started to give way in the last couple thousand k's. Held like anything in the wet and hardly ever had wheelspin in any gear right up until the last couple of thousand k's. They may be hard to get hold of though, I only know of one place that sell them. The new tyres I have now are shocking; when I get some money back up I going back to a set of Takuma tyres.

thats me, my traction was shocking, lexani tyres are yumcha poo, but im not going to change them till they wear out enuf, then im getting some real good ones
but i think loss of traction is part also cos my front suspension is getting a bit old now

Pretty sure Dunlop don't make an F1 Tryg?

They do SP Sport 01's and SP Sport Maxx TT's in the stock VRX sizes (225/40/18)

Unless you are thinking of the Goodyear F1 ASYM's, which they do make in our sizing which is very very similar to the TT's (Dunlop own Goodyear). Though these retail at about $500/corner. Cheapest I could get them for was $340/corner. I would be sceptical as to where that stock has come from if you can manage $200/tyre (if it is the F1 ASYM, anyway).

Yeah even on mates rate $200/pop for any big brand tyre in something around a 215/45R18 size I'd be sceptical as to whether they are old stock or grey imports...hell even $200 for Kumhos in that size is pretty much below what legit places sell them for!

Oh and he mentioned Goodyears earlier on in the thread, so I'd say him saying Dunlop was a mistake
