Air Compressors

Couldn't be bothered to read everything i have missed, but success for a amateur spray painter is achieved by have a compressor with a Min specs of 2hp (belt driven preferred)/60L tank/8cfm and make sure you have a regulator on the hose even if the tank has one. A small one near the can can be good, as long as its small and light weight. I always have a small spare compressor around just to get out of trouble if the main one fails.

As long as you're just painting a panel at a time.. not good enough to do continuous painting of a vehicle... If you have in fact done it.. then you must be way better than most trade painters.

And if you can't afford 2k for a set up, my apologies... but buying rubbish just means you will buy again in the future..

Good luck to you.

panel at a time..or whole car? your point?

I still affirm that cheap gear dies, the fittings snap (as they are only cast) and they generally give you less bang for your buck.

Sure, do your undercoat with one, or even a spray can... but for the sake of paying double the amount, you can get a lifetime lasting piece of gear.

my 2c

yes panel by panel one after the other. roof, bonnet, boot, doors, front guards, rear quarter. The compressor i used was borrowed from a mate that is an ex spray painter, so i assume it to be worthy.

Okay, quick lesson for the non-painter. That "may" work for flat colours, but any metallics prefer to be painted in 'one-shot' and panels all aligned on the car... not done individually.

You risk laying down the flake at odds to the other panel's angles of flake/mica...

Just some info for those going for a half-decent look...

i do agree to some extent and i by all means am no spray painter. I have done metallic, but it was very small size mica. It is possibe to do a car, but still on a panel basis. With a small compressor you wouldn't be doing a continues spray from head light to tail light. And as for compressor prices, $50 deffently no but you don't need to spend 2k if your not planning on doing a car a week. 600-800 will get more then needed for the odd job.

he wants to spend a lot less... I only caution, because I fear it will not give the finish the car deserves or he would actually want.

And, $2k was for my compressor, quality HVLP gun and dryer/additional regulator etc... not only a compressor.

hmm as long as I can get my undercoat on with a cheapy I'll be happy then I'll see about the colour, I'll probably be spraying some sort of single stage when it comes to it anyway. Just gotta weigh up the cost of getting it done vs setting myself up for the job.
