Air Compressors

Ok I can probably help here. Wanting a good compressor for under $500 is the hard part.

Most cheap compressors are piston. The best compressors are screw compressors. Piston compressors are less efficient and will get oil in the air.

The best set up is a compressor then receiver (tank, lol) and then dryer.

The receiver should have automatic and manual drains to get rid of water,

Fitting a suitable dryer with inlet and outlet filters will ensure the best possible quality air.

You can fit a hose from your receiver that removes moisture as well if you dont have a dryer.

Fitting filter/regulators before spraying and breathing air also is a good idea.

Youve just listed an aircompressor that would cost more than the car he is painting. Screw compressors start at like 3-4G for one with decent LPM.

I was going to try and hook you up but the cheapest we sell is twice your budget even with my discount. I thought we'd sell a cheaper one..obviously not :(

Where do you work?

Geezus Troy, you just described a business type compressor...

You can have a decent twin piston, with good solid fittings (not cast type) for about $750-$900... that should last you for years and years... I have had mine for about 13 years.. It supplies enough air (on a 15-amp plug), to run a HVLP gun continuously.

I do have a dryer, secondary regulator and very large water trap, but it still only has a 50ltr collector.

thanks for the try dave, might have a bit more.

will depend on how cheap i can get the parts to fix my car :)

but still you are in sydney?

posted for something that heavy will kill me

Yeah but we have stores all around the country mate, though the closest is 70km away in Bundaberg.

Ours are probably mid-range, at least the smallest is anyway. Maybe check out Blackwoods, they generally have some cheap kit...even if they are a competitor. So long as you get rid of the moisture in the lines you'll be right, it just means you'll have to take your time with one of the smaller tanks.

what is the best price you can get one of yours at daves because i may have a little bit more then originally budgeted to get one

$953.60 +GST for a 14CFM unit.

Twin cylinder, cast iron. 100psi/240Lpm
2.5HP electric single phase motor
10amp plug
55 litre tank (22 seconds of continuous air if my maths is any good - 240/55)
5 year compressor pump warranty
2 year motor warranty (from memory it's a honda unit, haven't eyed one in a while though so can't confirm).

If you were to pickup from Bundy.

I'd look into a cheaper option to start with TBH, that leaves you more room to buy all of the extra's you'll need (hose, gun, dryer, etc). I'd much rather have a cheaper compressor and quality attachments.

Just my opi

wont even be for me. it is for my painter he used my dads old compressor for painting our cars and that compressor has carked it.

my painter use to be a professional painter. painting airplanes to complete custom $15000 paint job cars. but is now retired and only paints the odd car for us. so equipment is not a problem.

and yer will need to find something a bit cheaper and something that will just run from a normal house hold powerpoint. he just connects it up to the power in his shed. So what amp plug is that then sorry i am a noob with painting guys :(

help-15amp-plug.jpg

You can tell if it is a 15amp plug, if the earth spade is larger than your normal in-house plugs....

for getting just enough air to run a hvlp spray gun on a budget how do you guys think i'd go rigging what I remember to be a 50l tank up to something like those supercheap ones that put out about 200lpm, i.e. around 7cfm. The compressor I had beforehand seemed to hold up fine with a gun(6.6cfm from memory) but then again maybe the paintwork was *poo*ty due to lack of air pressure?

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... escription <<like this cheapy. so about 90l of tank capacity

I know it's probably not going to be the longest lasting thing, but I'm on a budget(or at least will be once I find a project).

Personally, I think shopping at SCA is a critical error..

I think you should wait longer and buy better..it's fiscally responsible.

I like more CFM than that, even with my $800 HVLP (which does not exhaust air like some cheaper rubbish).

not necessarily that compressor but I was just thinking of something around that cfm, since I had the larger tank capacity I figured doing a car panel by panel I'd be right. Hmm I'll have a look around

also, if one were spraying just primer/hifill would that have more/less requirements in terms of pressure?

stupid questions but yeh :D

Aim for a 3hp, belt driven model. 270lpm free and 100ltr collector.

That is the formula for success!

(you would need a 15amp circuit, obviously with 3hp)

higher pressure, larger diameter.. I use a 1.8 or 2.0 and a suction feed gun for undercoat. Final coat, I use my HVLP with a 1.4 or touch-ups with the 1.0
