2001 4g93 sohc tapping. Vid link added.

I just go e over it with fine tooth comb.
It makes noise under load but not free reving.
Put in drive, foot brake down and load up and it ticks.
I looked at everything, its an internal noise from the motor towards cyl one.
It's not a spun bearing as that noise is differant.
I'm taking to a mechanic mate of mine shortly, I'm putting my money on cracked piston or similar.

It could be no1 injector dribbling, if it was a diesel I would bet my house on it but a petrol it's only a guess. Pull no 1 injector wires and see what happens. It happens because the fuel gets dumped instead of atomising and burns too long. Get this at work twice a week at least.

That would result in a quite smokey exhaust which it doesn't have and also major spark plug fowling which it also does t have.
Comp test or leak down test will answer all I reccon.

Incorrect, only oil will cause smoke and fouling also, at worst you should have a rich exhaust. With a diesel the only Symptom of a dribbling injector is compression knock and a possible misfire under load at low rpm. But like I said I'm no petrol expert, a 1.8l petrol is a completely different beast to a quad turbo 80l V16 diesel

For the record, excessive petrol will cause a smokey blaaaaaack exhaust as well

Drifta-X, let us know how the testing goes.

Could it be the CV joints?

I had a vibration under acceleration at speed, 80kph or higher. Foot off the accelerator and it went away.

Edited - sorry didn't read your next post...

Sorry about the bad engine, can't it be fixed or would that cost too much for this car?

It depends. The cylinder wall could be *fudge*ed. Could not be. Eitherway alot of machining will br needed. Bot really worth it unless he was gonna build it with higher grade parts for more power.

Chances are would have scored the bore, so need full machine for over sized pistons, will also require crank work to ballence with slightly heavier pistons, deck block, shave head blah blah blah.
I will have to do it in 1 day so mrs doesn't miss a day of work.
So far found engine for $550 with 30 day warrenty.
Got a timing belt sitting in shed and auto service kit.
Ill throw a water pump and new leads at it too.
The mrs better give me some good *woo-hoo* I tell ya!

I'd be interested to see exactly what it is!

Had a mate with a noise like that in his car but it was because he stuffed up, had a blown head gasket so pulled the head and replaced it, when he put the head back on he didn't put them back to TDC and bent 4 valves.

Obviously not your problem here but it would be very interesting to see exactly what is causing the fault, and if you do strip it let us all know.

Also I bought a complete 03 CE coupe for $500 for my conversion, engine running and in great nick, and there are a few 4g93s for sale in WA for the $350 mark but if your happy with $550 all good

I say put in a 4G93T and see how the Mrs likes it :)

FYI I was told a total rebuild of the 4G93 would cost around $8k, for not much more you can be sitting in a current shape Lancer sedan or hatch.

^lol dat rip off.

OP I thought it was a 4G69. 500 is a bit crap for a 93. Surely you can get one for a bit less then that.

8k??
Would want to be a full hardcore race motor for the price. Stoker, full head work, debur block, arp every bolt, Ross balancer etc.
My silvia engine only has stock crank and all else done and cost me bout 5.5k
Bumped compression upto 9.0:1 and will be running 1.5bar boost.
Yay 4th gear roll on power skids

I've seen 4g69's with low kms for roughly $500. Maybe it's time for the KIA after all??

Cracked piston? Do an oil change, should find evidence if it is the bottom end.

Just because it still makes the noise on 98 doesn't mean you should rule out detonation/preignition. I would suggest taking it to a mechanic before getting too carried away on the new engine bandwagon....
