2001 4g93 sohc tapping. Vid link added.

Doing some work on the mrs car.
Has a major ticking noise.
Thought was the tappers needing an adjustment, they where slightly out and now are good.

Still taps! It's not a constant tap, idle it does t happen and at top of rev range u can only bairly hear it.
Just cruising on light throttle it taps like mad and then At other times it doesn't.
99% sure it's not a bottom end as I have heard plenty of them b4 and that is usually a knock sound not a tap and consistant.
Sounds like its coming from the front (exhaust side) of the engine and I'm at a loss as to what it could be.
If anyone could shed some light on this for me it would be greatly appreciated.

hey man welcome to the forum. it would help a lot if you could get a video of it and link it to us. is the tapping noise in beat or is it just random at random speeds?

:problem: wait what size engine is in it? 1.5, 1.8 or 2.4?

Could be the cat on your exhaust. My old car used to rattle and tap on certain rpms or it could be a hydraulic lifter? I've had tapping injectors before but was only mainly on idle....hmmm???

I got a funny feeling it's meant to be 4G93 instead of 4G69.

Anyway, in order to diagnose it, you said you had the tappets adjusted, but what about the oil? Is it fresh oil or old oil? Is it when the oil is cold or warm? What grade of oil are you using?

If it's not the tappets, then is the sound speed related or revs related, or random? All these things help in trying to find where the problem is

Oops my bad 4g63 I think, 1.8lt sohc auto (slow)
It so sounds like tappets.
Increase in tapping with revs, in time with engine, twice as many taps at 4000 then 2000
Motul 4100 turbo lite 10w 30. Changed every 10,000 on the dot.
Cold or hot (well warm) it ticks.
It is becoming more common in happening but it still random.
Does it more often then not now.

Have a listen to the PCV valve on top of your rocker cover it may just be the problem, as my last car had a dodgy PCV And ticks crazy and sounds so much like tappets

To eliminate a little or big end, pull 1 lead at a time, if it stops its that cylinder. If not keep looking, sounds like PCV with these engins could be a possibility!

Doubt it pvc but will look at it b4 mrs goes to work.
I would do a lead pull but it only happens under load and don't want to flood a cylinder.

4g63 is an evo engine lol, 2L turbo. yours is the 93. also with an older engine you should be starting to change the oil more around 5-7k kms

Yeah sorry my mits engine codes are all up the shop,
It done 4,000 since last change and still fairly clear the oil, so y I still run too 10k between changes.
Will check the pcv in a couple hrs.

Im thinkin your just gettin the injectors clicking mixed up, injectors sound heaps like tappet noise.

Na not injectors.
My silvia has low impedance injectors (the noisey kind) and the bigger they are the noisier they are and those are 750cc ones.
U can hear this noise from the house when the mrs gets home.
U have to be at front of house and listen carefully but you hear it.
Don't know of any injector that's that loud.
 
Yeah doesn't sound great, not that its should not be an issue here but it sounds the same as when I get pre-det. Maybe a bad batch of fuel?
I've had alot of different tapping from this motor recently.
Chunk of metal in the cyl.
Loose fly wheel
Exhaust leak @ the manifold
Wrong valve clearance
Pinging from low octane fuel (anything under 98)
Exhaust hanger on chassis

Yeah tapping is my worst nightmare

Something more oil related. Maybe the oil pump is on its way out. Possibility that its not building up enough pressure till higher revs , which will create alot of tapping.
Timing can also be out.. When did you have the last major service with timing belt, water pump etc. Not sure how many kms an oil pump is supposed to last. I only replaced mine because the motor was out and it was easy to do.
