2001 4g93 sohc tapping. Vid link added.

Yeah, cylinder one is low. Nothing there says piston rings though.
A head gasket that has failed or a cracked head will cause it to burn lean creating detonation for example.

Just suggesting to explore all avenues and prove the fault before wasting a lot of time and money.

A wise idea if you have the time to rip the engine apart.

But it could be cheaper and quicker to swap out the engine first then get it checked, if it's nothing major swap it back or just sell it.

Just to clarify it is the 4G93 right, not the 4g69?

Yeah 4g93
My mechanic mate is a gun, did his apprenticeship building race motors and then was doing same for another 10yrs then was an ultra tune manager for 10yrs and now owns his own.
$550 for the engine and has 80,000ish Kms.
Ill pull the piston when I rip the engine out. I just wan it fixed
1000% not detention. I have done a fair bit of dyno tuning on hypo jap cars and know the differance between a ping, pink and knock.
I have blown a few head gaskets in differant places b4 (water-oil, cylinder-water and a combo of both) not once has it made sounds like this.
There is no oil and water mixing, not exessive coolant preasure and no dipstick poping out so have ruled out head gasket.
If by some small chance I'm wrong I will have a nice expencive paper weight or door stop lol.
You guys have been awesome and I really appreciate the help, once I have sorted it all out ill post up the remaining parts for anyone who is intersted.

Yeah cos that's an easy swap! Probably have more luck with a v6tt!

Keep it simple. $550 is too much. Don't think you should pay more then 250 for a 4g93. I just gave one away for free

I'm not worried about the price really.
If it was my car I would throw a 4G63 at it with a trust td06L2, oh yeah torque steer lol
Just for the mrs I'm going to put a stock replacement, and having a warrenty for 30days is a good thing coz ill hammer crap out of it on my mates dyno, hehehe make sure it's a good unit
Mivec would be nice but can't be stuffed with new loom etc.
Don't worry guys ill throw up pics ect.
Once this is over I got to get back to working on the silvia and get that thing ready for my first time attack woohoo.

Helped a mate throw a gen3 in a Gemini so couldn't be that hard lol.
Love a good challenge when it's modifying.

Unfortunay I found out after paying for the engine that its a change over
Hat an asshole I reccon.
So wont be a lt to crack engine and post up pix.
Oh well such is life.

There's 4g93s online for 300 30day warnanty.. Gahh its alright at least it will be back on the road !

All swapped over. Started perfect first crank.
Great engine, better then old one, noticeable increase of low end torque.
Mrs very happy.

So based solely on the fact that I have had a 4G63 for the past 13 years and seen every nut, bolt, screw and clip more than 3 times each so I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and try and help:

You changed the water pump some time back, correct?
The new water pump came with plastic fins on the fan, correct? (May not. If not, noise is louder)
The noise in the clip above increases with throttle but almost goes away sometimes (motorways etc), correct?

I'd say that your water pump is on its way out and the fan shaft has play in it. The fins of the fan actually sit inside the block (think room fan, and block is the blade guard) and when it's under load (pump is driven by cam belt) it's being pulled off centre slightly and the edge of fan fins are collecting the block and making that noise.

Take the top and middle cam cover off, locate pump (back edge, bout halfway down block) grab the pulley and wiggle. If it moves that's your problem. If it don't move, you just wasted 10 mins reading this and 30 mins pulling off some covers.

Now, if it's your lifters or anything that is touched by oil really then go buy some 'Promar MLB8' because this stuff is AMAZING!!! 92 Lancer GSR with lifter noise so loud you could not talk to someone by car, add 70Ml MLB8 with oil change and wait 2mins......... GONE, not reduced, GONE! and till next service too. That sh1t is simply incredible.

On a side note, is it an Auto? Cause if it sounds more like an exhaust leak than a ticking and the pitch of noise changes when you Change from P to D and D to N etc with park being quietest then it may well be your 'Throw Out Bearing' which is the bearing that engages the clutch plate from the gearbox.

Try this - disregard all thoughts about what the noise is, start the car, close your eyes and ask yourself "does it sound like a bearing that's got no grease in it that is spinning hard out." Hmmmm, Does it?

Good Luck Mate

try adjust your dizzy a tiny bit
like move the dizzy so the the securing bolts are more towards the middle

had this same sound coming from manual, low rpm/half or more throttle, fixed it with that
