Wheel and Tyre Question/Information Thread

2inch rim increase rule is a myth...

did some research in regards to 18's on my CE sedan and as far as RTA know, running a 215/35R18 IS LEGAL because your only increasing the overall rolling diameter by 11.68mm which is well within the maximum of 15mm...just got off the phone to NSW RTA techincal issues and the bloke said you can run any size rims provided that the overall rolling diameter is no more than 15mm over standard and that the rim width is not increased by more than 26mm and still be legal to drive.

i've read on a couple of forums that you were not able to increase rim size by more than 2inches? so if you were to be pulled over by police and they issue you a defect the guy said to have a copy of this document - http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... 9_rev4.pdf which states the current RTA specs for Wheels & Tyres...wonder if that'd be enough to waive the defect notice?

just something i thought i'd share..

Re: 2inch rim increase rule is a myth...

Stock fitment: 595.88mm (185/65R14)
Currently fitted: 625.09mm (215/45R17) not ok.
Purchasing: 607.56mm (215/35R18) ok

no taller than 610.88mm (max 15mm increase) in overall rolling diameter, so fitting 215/35R18's (607.56mm) is fine according to NSW RTA as you are within the 15mm increase...

Tyres

I'm sure this has already been talked about but I was wondering what tyres is everyone using ??? I'm looking at purchasing a set in the future maybe with some new rims but anyway... What do you all swear by for your rides ??? Any preferences for all around driving and grip ???

Re: Tyres

All depends on what you want out of your tyres and budget really...

For a cheap all rounder the Kumho KU31 is pretty good, the KU21s are also good bit harder and alot quieter at the expense of a lil bit of grip compared to the KU31s. If you want to go all out I liked the Bridgestone Adrenalins when I had them, but they are pretty pricey.

Re: Tyres

i dont really have a preference for tyres, since i drive like an old man (i stop 500m from the set of lights, and about a 30 car gap between me and the dude infront of me, always 5-10 below the speed limit) i never had a need, but when i get new rims, i would love to get some kumho's of some nature

Re: Tyres

Thanks :) Yeah I'm thinking when I get my tax back next year it will be about time to get rid of the cheap Chinese crap ones I have... Not a big Kuhmo fan... Unless they get better the more you pay cause I have only had some budget ones... I was thinking maybe the Dunlop SP 300 (I think that's what it's called) but yeah I don't really know about a budget just yet. Just wondering on what people think.

Re: Tyres

Going by that theory because Bridgestone RE92s were the stock 15s on Commos and were crap then Bridgestone Adrenalins that cost significantly more must also be crap....

If you buy cheap tyres then generally they are hard and designed for longevity, not performance. Compare apples with apples, not oranges...

Re: Tyres

I'm really not looking a massive performance tyre. Just something that will be safe and save my arse should I ever need to. Something that lasts over 40,000 kms would be nice too :) :p

Re: Tyres

Nexen N6000 is a good 'budget' performance tyre.
It held up to some track abuse and a fair number of km's.

Otherwise KU36's are pretty damn grippy for the price.

just about to try some 595SS from Federal.

im glad i can keep it legal with 18's, i have a set of Konig 215/35R18's with tyres to pick up from a mate for $500! bargain! gonna keep a laminated copy of the RTA document in the car just incase..

How does a 17in wheel with a 45 mm high wall = 625.09 mm

And 18 in wheel with a 35 mm high wall = 607.56

You have increased the wheel by 1in and only reduced the wall Height by 20 mm.

the sidewall number is a % of the width of the tyre...

Yup, its not a measurement of mm. Its a ratio between the section height and width expressed as a %

eg. a 40 profile tire with 205mm width will have a section height of 82mm
