Wheel and Tyre Question/Information Thread

Re: 225-45-15 - Will these fit?

yes, will need guards rolled though i presume.

i have 215/45/16 on mine, once i get coilovers it should be sweet no scrubbing, not that it does now!

Re: 225-45-15 - Will these fit?

Is that the tires in your avatar?
Because, they stick out quite a bit.

Where do they scrub at the moment and how low is it?
Also, ever thought of using 225/40/16?

yeah they stick out a bit, they dont scrub at the moment, its at stock height on stock suspension.
225 would probably scrub, thats why i opted for 215's

Lachy are you able to go to full steering lock without rubbing?

i have 205/45/16 on 16x8+20 rims, lowered on coilovers and i scrubbed heaps. i needed to roll and pull both the front and rear guards. I promise you, you'll scrub a bit

Re: 225-45-15 - Will these fit?

cc lancer guards curl in a bit towards the bottom more so than ce lancer/mirage do :)

ill let you know saturday, its going for a spin!

You are at standard height though. At that height you can make big wheels fit fine but the problem is once you are running a bit lower that things start fouling over bumps etc

Would there be any value to me getting a club copy of the tyre fitters guidelines of what size tyres are allowed to be fitted different sized rims?? I beleive the RTA and presumably insurers use that handbook as the basis of whats roadworthy or not,etc...

Yeah great idea if you can get a hold of one, then theres at least a set list of what is legal for each car rather than everybody hearing different things or coming up with their own interpretations. Can you also check if it only covers NSW or is relevant for all states?

so im doing some research into a new set of wheels and tyres for my car which is a 2001 CE Lancer sedan... not an evo. when i got the car it already had the full widebody evo5/6 kit on it and these 17's which are pretty yuck and dont do the car or the kit any justice..

so i have lined up a set of Konig 18's that look great and for cheap from a mate but i want to keep it legal so this is what ive found from NSW RTA...

RTA: Wheels & Tyres

1. wheel track must not be increased by more than 25mm beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle.

2. Where non original axle or suspension components are fitted, the offset of the wheel in relation to the axle or stub axle assembly used shall not be increased by more than 12.5mm each side of the vehicle based on the specifications of the axle components used.

Minor Wheel Changes:

3. Wheels up to 26mm wider than the largest optional wheel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle can be fitted without the need to notify the RTA.

4. The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle.

Front wheel drive vehicles

Except where the original manufacturer provides to the contrary, front wheel widths shall be no more than 26mm greater than the widest optional wheel offered by the vehicle manufacturer. This requirement also applies to fourwheel drive vehicles with constant front wheel drive.

now according to this 215/35R18 size wheels & tyres are ok because they are within the overall diameter increase which is 15mm max. But the section width increase is 30mm, 4mm over the max increase which is 26mm... is 4mm really gonna be an issue? that is my only concern... if it will be a problem who would i have to take the car in to have it assessed?

Factory - 595.88mm (185/65R14) no bigger than 610.88mm (max 15mm increase) in overall diameter.
Current - 625.09mm (215/45R17) not ok.
Konig - 607.56mm (215/35R18) ok

16, 17 or 18's? What wheels & tyres do you run?

reason i ask is for legal purposes and if it is worth having "oversized" wheels engineered? i have 215/45R17 fitted at the moment but they dont do the car or widebody evo kit any justice so im opting to go for a mates set of 18inch Konig rims which are 215/35R18..

now stock diameter is 595.88mm (185/65R14) and the 18's measure 607.56mm (215/35R18)... according to NSW RTA you can increase overall diameter by no more than 15mm which leaves the 18's within legal.. am i right? because the max would be 610.88mm...i may be incorrect somewhere but this info is from what i gathered off the RTA website... if anyone has info on engineering or how much it would cost to have 18inch wheels approved then feel free to post it up.

otherwise if it's too much hassle i'd say i'll opt to remove the entire widebody kit and have back to standard with 16's....it's pointless having a nice Evo5/6 widebody kit and not being able to have the wheels/tyres to suit.. so what size wheels & tyres do you lo have on your lancers? any cop trouble?

cheers
