subaru=brz, toyota=ft-86 built the car together, it was a project they shared, the only difference between them are cosmetic.

it's the same platform with a slightly different kit on.... it kind of should look the same.

Have a look at the holden nova vs Toyota corolla, holden apollo vs Toyota camry, ford courier vs Mazda bravo, ford escape vs Mazda tribute, holden barina vs suzuki swift and the new one vs the daewoo kalos. This is not something new, car manufacturers have been doing it for years.

So many people miss the point of what this car actually is!
Toyota and Subaru went into bed together to make this Toybaru.
The companies made this car for the car enthusiasts to help stimulate the purchase of aftermarket products to boost the economy. HKS has already made a supercharger kit for it! This car is not meant to be left stock!
The GT-86 and BRZ share the same chassis, engine and panels. Only cosmetic changes are different. Subaru is going for a more premium feel with the BRZ.
The name 86 comes from the engine. It has a bore and stroke of 86mm, making it a 'square' engine. It also pays homage to the old AE86. The engine is of Subaru design with Toyota handling the heads and fuel injection.
A lot of people are talking about putting a bigger engine, but that will upset the 53:47 weight distribution.
I am keen to see where people will go with this car. Apparently with some engine work you can rev this thing up to 10,000rpm! And with the ECU from Subaru I see plenty of quick ECU map flashes being made.

Yer, it is a nice car. But to me it's just like all the other cars being released. I can't afford any of them.

my only concern with buying this would be the feeling of guilt when modding it, knowing that I was killing the new car warranty.

As the original price speculations were putting it amongst the hot hatches I am rather happy to see the lower price. Mostly because I HATE hatchbacks because they're just a gigantic compromise of car styling in the face of people wanting to put *poo* into their boot.
I may consider one once someone's taken the depreciation blow. And it will happen, this is not some magic bullet depreciation immune car perpetuated by anime like the AE86. Ah wait... that didn't happen till the AE86 was 15 years old

Try live in Perth. Wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come out here for another 2 or 3 months. When we bought our territory it was out over east waaaaay before we could finally get it. Stupid Perth is stupid.
