Stock 1.8L Coupe what to do first?

Total Lancer noobie here :D. My used car warranty has run out so its time to make some changes to my (nearly) stock Gli 1.8. All I've done so far is the tail lights and blinkers.

Next I was thinking about:

Exhaust - Heard good things about Lukey Ultra Flo mufflers but I dunno what they sound like, anyone know? Id rather something more downplayed but still sporty rather than those annoying exhausts that sound like angry bees, also I dont really wanna end up with a fart cannon so I was looking at going with a fairly conservative tip to match. Is it worth going a step further and looking at replacing the cat or does that get massively expensive?

Air filter - was considering the K&N replacement air filter to go into stock air box as I didnt really feel like messing about with piping and stuff but supercheap is asking $200 and repco $170. I dunno if its worth it TBH as ripping out the air box and putting in a pod filter would probably give better air flow anyway? (BTW are there any kits out there for CE Lancers? From what Ive seen on here you guys seem to be a pretty DIY bunch)

Window tint - I was looking to go dark as possible to go with the navy body paint.

So far thats it, what do you guys think? Suggestions? Comments? Also if anyone can give me price ranges for any of this stuff I would greatly appreciate it as I have absolutely no clue about how much Im looking at for any of this stuff.

Thanks in advance!

DIY on the intake is an option, however, kits are available. It'd be easy to make one yourself if you can find the attachment to the MAF.

Exhaust, if you are doing it for the sound just go from the cat back, don't worry about doing a high flow or anything.

Air Filter. In most cases, the performance of the vehicle is lessened by using a pod filter. Unless there is a need. Research on what benefits each type have to offer.

What I'd do if it was you would be modify the standard air box so at the bottom there is a cold air feed. Make the feed substantial therefore making the majority of air colder (in theory). A better filter will give you better cleaning/air flow, K&N is widely regarded as one of the better filter makers.

plz read this thread, it covers the basics on what u may want to do and what u will get out of it

thinking about doing an intake, plz read this thread for all the info

as far as exhaust, if ur going for power, get a set of extractors (they are a performance exhaust manifold will increase power)
if ur going for sound get a catback 2.25" press bent or mandrel bend no larger, this wont really give any power increase, its just for sound

for extra cheap easy power tweaks, u could look into an alutec lightened auxillery pully (it runs the alternator and power steering belts and aircon)
making this lighter decreases the power sapped from the engine, and it is a great easy mod to have (find these on RPW website)

tint, great idea, we do live in australia after all

ppl say "dont go pod, stay pannel".... but i think you should decide for youself, pod will give a nice sporty tone and "IF" set up right it can yeild a few KW gain in power from cold air induction
if u stay pannel filter, then i suggest u put a cold air feed pipe down to ur bumper like james suggested, this gives a very hollow intake sound tho and i found that not very sporty, but power will be fairly equal to the pod setup fed down to get cold air

With my old lancer, to get any sort of positive power response I had to place the pod so low it wasn't practical. At the sight of rain I had to pull over and turn the car off.

Is there any guide on how to modify the stock intake?

not really but there are pics in the intake thread i linked above, all that u need to do is remove the lower resonator box from infront of ur passenger side wheel arch

after that is done put a bit of flexy pipe from ur bar to to stock box

Extend the airbox to throttle body tube.
Redirect to behind headlight.
Have naked panel filter exposed from missing headlight.

Success.

Does anyone on here have experience with the K&N replacement panel filter? It seems like the best option but Im a bit sceptical about whether the "claims" of horsepower gains are actually noticeable.

@ resuliac yeah cheers I noticed the pics I'll have a look tomorrow at how it would be done on my own car. I take it you just have the filter in the stock air box so then the replacement would still be better over the el cheapo paper one thats in there.

Note: I have no experience with said filter.

I don't think you'll notice a thing, unless you modify the airbox, then you might notice some difference.
On the other side, your car will love you for it.

there are no gains in power, its just a filter, it is however oiled so it resists water well (which is good if ur putting a big @rse pipe to it from the bumper) so it doesnt get moist from mist or water particles

cold air is what will give u minor gains, any old filter will flow well enfu for a NA lancer

Yeah I wouldnt think it would have an real gains tbh, though Ill look into running a pipe down from the stock intake.

What about exhausts can you guys recommend me something in particular? The stock one irks me so I wanna get rid of it asap.. :p

i did mention it up there,

look into a set of hens performance extractors, they will give u some nice gains in power
as for sound as said, 2.25" press bend "catback" for cheapish, then whatever muffler u want, i would say lukey or magnaflow for best performance and sound, altho magnaflow tend to be expencive maybe worth it tho

Oh wow sorry man I totally skipped that post coz I started reading the stuff in the links you posted...

Yeah I was thinking about a Lukey myself but no one has been able to give me any price for them thus far. I reckon Ill give Walker a call directly and see what they say.

cheers mdclear. Thats pretty alright, definitely worth doing to get rid of the tiny stocky.

lol stocky zorst is pro man, dont diss the stealth stylez

The Ninja zaust. LOL.

After seeing so many done up Lancers the stocky just looks odd. After chucking on the altezzas today I really need to fix it up coz it looks even more out of place.

Just put a nice tip on... then it won't look outta place... and by tip I don't mean cannon.

put a 3" stainless tip on it then ppl will be looking at u fanging it thinking "where the fk is the zorst sound?!"
$20 for a tip then just mount it diy, stealth is always a good aproach IMO for cars that arnt boasting extreme mods/power

Yes unless you have four turbos the size of your head strapped onto a v12, you don't need the best and most awesome exhaust in the history of earth and beyond...

BTW res, is your bumper a different white then your car or is it me trippin'?
