ok so im not sure if this has been covered before but i was wonering

since i live on the sunny coast where its f***in hot and it rains like a mother f***er

i was wondering about CAI... would it be wise to put 1 in the engine bay and have a custom hood with a vent above it or to risk it and run it down to the head lights or front bumper
image is hood im talking aBOUT

and if i did buy the hood.. when it rains its gonna get into the vent and into the CAI or will the filter stop some of the water

any advice would be great

water+filter = baaaaaaad.
and also just be careful with carmate. lots of bad rep.

yeah i no water and filter are a bad mix but i wasnt sure were to put it unless it just sits in my engine bay and sucks up all the nice HOT air

plus i was just using carmate as an example.. i can find this hood else where

If i did mine with a pod, I'd have it mostly enclosed, sorta in the wheel well and have a flexi pipe from the front bar up to it so when the car's moving air will be forced up the pipe towards the pod. You could even seal the flexi pipe to the pod if you wanted.
Rain shouldn't be much of an issue there.

what about the pod being too low? i dunno if you guys have seen sydneys weather lately... but roads flooding etc. i got a professional opinion, and they said even if the pod gets wet. the water will evaporate from the heat of the engine before it even gets halfway. but i still cant help but wonder...

where r u hangin your pod though.. behind grill or in the bay

hey man i got a full CAI with my pod sitting in front of the passenger wheel (behind the fog light on an MR) ans ive driven through heavy rain and had no problems even through some sections of shallow water, without problems. I mean id have to avoid some deep ass flooded areas but other than that no problems

as do i, had no problems. also putting that bonnet on is ilegal as its fiberglass

is fibreglass illegal in QLD? as its not in NSW only carbon fibre is illegal in NSW (according to RTA Tech info)

get a nice high quality k&n pod with a shield over it & for extra protection get a sock over it(k&n make them for like $20) i had all of the above on my wrx......but that was injen...guess thats what 3k of intercooler & piping gets ya ;)

Get a cai. Just drive with common sense with it, dont go dunking your car in massive puddles otherwise even heavy rain doesnt effect it, ive had mine on for aaaaagggessss, and its been raining in penrith for the last 3 months -_- so you'll be fine

ok thx.. i just wasnt sure how sensitive they were to water thats all

guess that will be my next thing to get then :)

EDIT: turns out its illegal to run it on a car from 1994 and up....

ow nice... yer i only get a flood like that in the street where i work.... (and i have to drive through it)

f*** i hate rain sometimes... thought i flooded my car once when i drove through it, sounded like it was drowning or something but it was fine after a SLOW drive with my foot planted
down the motorway doing like 35km....

never doing that agian

My cai is down near the ground in the bar and no problem, make sure you use a oiled filter to help stop water. And even though it shows it in that picture that bonnet doesn't come with that hole cut out. I have that bonnet and had the hole custom cut.

TL/dr
i swear i covered this question in the FAQ/DIY on pod filters and CAI thread

pod down in wheel well behind the passenger fog light area is a good place, you would be hard pressed to get water up in there
splashes arnt much of a worry

you would have to be going thru a puddle alost up to your door sills to have it lapping at the pod
and i dont think anyone is that stupid

as for bonnet vent CIA, make sure there is a drain point and raise the pod filter off the bottom of the enclosure
water will get in to these ones alot, so make sure the drain hole works well
imo not the best set up for cai

a better setup would be the same enclosure with stock bonnet, and the CAI feed pipe coming from down the hole in the passenger side behind the battery to the grill
that way water has to beat gravity to get to your pod, whereas with the bonnet vent it will just be falling in on it and all the water on the bonnet flowing in
