Lowering via kingsprings

hey guys,

I know this question has come up alot but i was just wondering should I put the superlows in myself.. Ive seen the mcm video on how they lowered the daihatsu and it didnt seem to look too hard.. Ill be able to get 90% of that equipment and the underneath of the lancer where the struts are seems to be quite basic..
I was also wondering is there any threads on here on how to put in the lowered springs...
Any help would be good.. Thanks Guys :)

its very strait forward (was going to say easy, but i have a scar on my head to prove otherwise :p )

step 1, park car on lvl surface, put in gear and hand brake on

step 2, jack up front and put on axle stands

step 3, remove wheels

step 5, pull the brake line out of the clamp support (blue circle) and then undo the 2x nuts (red circles). then once that is done, they should come free

Step 4, undo the 3x top bolts in the engine bay.once those bolts are undone, the strut might be feel stuck, but just give it a light tap on its noggin and it should fall out (at this stage watch your toes or get ready to catch)

then rinse and repeat

also, i cant remember how tight you need to do up these nuts (in nM or torques or whatever they call em) and the last thing you want to do is sheer the heads lol

but it is HIGHLY recommended that once you do this, get up and get a wheel allignment and balance done asap-ish

im afraid i didnt take any pics of the rear setup, but its fairly along the same lines, but more 'fiddly'

What Cesario said,

Once you have the coilover assembly out of the car.

Put the spring compressors on like in the mighty mods video to take the load off the top hat.
Then undo the top hat bolt/nut.
Pull the tophat off and then the spring, put new spring on and the do in reverse to tighten everything back up.

The rears will be different to the Diahatsu. The lancer rear setup is similar to the front, except there is only one bolt at the bottom and 2 at the top of the shock holding it to the chassis.

ok, i found a pic of the rears that 'might' help

step 1, park car on lvl surface, put in gear and hand brake on

step 2, jack up rear and put on axle stands

step 3, remove wheels

step 4, pull the brake line out of the clamp support (same setup as fronts) and then undo the 2x nuts (red circles). be cautious with this as the lower arm that the 2x bolts are connected to is spring loaded (of sorts) and if your not ready it will spring up and clock you good

good writeup man, i never realised hwo funny ur zaust looked haha.
yeh, its a hot dog to dump tip, then some bended reo bar as supports, it was my first welding venture as i needed something that would fit as the old droid bar sat down too far and i couldnt keep my old muffler on
but i have a new muffler, new rear bar and im gonna get a more 'pro' job on it this time :p
it has about 20 leaks on the welds too :p

May I add one suggestion; please have a torque wrench handy and re-tighten bolts to correct torque, and use some Loctite thread adhesive for added security.

Nice write-up Cesario.

BTW, I have King superlow rears and low fronts, in my CJ Lancer, gives it a much better ride-height and stance, without sending the alignment settings too-far out of kilter...

Good luck.

yeh, i think i might add up an 'official' DIY for this later in the CE DIY section
just gotta gather some more pics

YES ces do that please!! i wanted to try this myself soon if i get new springs. I was gonna say this was a good DIY but if you make an official one that would be even better! :D

Is where I mostly fail.. I just do the work and forget to document it.. considering I have done all 50-odd mods myself, I should have shared that corporate knowledge on...

Thanks heaps for the info! especially Cesario, it really helps me out.. Thanks guys

just curious guys
what would be the correct torque settings for both the bolts at the top of the shocks and the bottoms that would connect to the lower arms and what not?

Hey guys I did my front springs today and everything seems to be ok but I was wondering the bolt at the top of the shock ( in the middle of the 3 others around it) doesnt seem to be tight and I cant fully tighten it..? Its the bolt in the hole in the middle.. I was thinking maybe ill just get it checked properly by a mechanic or whatever.. Does anyone have any recomendations for where I should take it.. (will a normal mechanic do the shocks aswell as other things..) any feedback would be good.. Thanks dane :)

sorry cant help you there, but possibly because the lowered spring is shorter so the top has to be screwed down on it more but it has reached the end of the thread, so it cant be tighter?. but don't know for sure..

But I have a question for you. Did you HAVE to use spring compressors to put the new springs in? or is it low enough without having to use them? I'm a cheap bastard and I don't want to have to buy some, only to use them once.

Hmm yeah it could be..
Yes you do lol.. The king springs are still too high.for the shocks and need to be compressed.. Aswell as the stock springs.

damn.. looks like ill have to buy some... 45 bucks for two off ebay isnt bad i guess.

You need to use the compressors to get the old ones out.. putting in the new springs, no.

You will benefit by having an air ratchet or air torque-gun to get the hat-nut down correctly, without the shock's shaft endlessly spinning, unless it has a recess in the top (not all do).

I did not use compressors to put 'in' my front lows or rear superlows... might be model dependant though...

Comments from the crowd?!

mannnn we must be so dodgey lol

take the strut out & get the air rachet onto it & stand back when she lets go lol inb4sexjoke

and too tighten cause my air rachet is crap we do it up as much as we can with it then just get onto it with the breaker bar lol 2 man job of corse :)

i love fitting coilovers but sooooo much easier :D

If you value your eye sight I'd definitely be using compressors especially to remove them. For the sake of ~$30 from an auto shop it could be a costly thing to cheap out on
