Jared's CH project

Alright, wanted to get a little build thread so here goes. Please note, this car is mostly for show, want to do as little performance wise so i can afford something nice down the track

Around June last year i purchased a red CH lancer after my old pulsar died. I didn't really have any interest in mitsubishi's in general (except evos), so this was new territory for me. Little did i know, the 2.4L Mivec was a tough, fast little engine! I got the car for $6500 with 3 years used car warranty and unfortunately didn't get a photo of the thing as it was when i bought it. But apart from a missing air box funnel/duct to make the thing sound a bit better, and some wheels, the car was absolutely bog-stock.

First thing i did was replace the stock gear shifter with a SCA drift-style black shifter.
Keeping the subtle look going on the cheap, i de-badged all but the mitsubishi logos, then i painted the rear one black;

I then decided i hated the silver look of my wheels (sadly, no pic there either) and i painted those black too;

I then bought some nightshade from autobarn, and set to work on tinting the taillights and side indicators. i think i'll do my taillights again one day.

I started to get a little obsessed with the black on red look, so i decided the front end had a little too much silver and has some fun spraying the grille and front badge (pic heavy)

Next was the interior, and this was where it got fun! I got a free head unit (brand new after conning my brother out of it), free sub and amp. all i had to buy was the wiring kit ($50 from SCA). Head unit install was easy, i'm sure there's tutorials on here for it. pulling apart the interior for the wiring was just as easy and only took a few hours to get everything done. the longest part was my DIY boot floor which i'm quite proud of even though it isn't finished. Heres the boot with everything stripped out, and then with the sub/amp in and the floor almost done (will get around to it one day)

Considering i spent all of $50 on the sound system itself, i'm very very happy with the sound it generates!

The last thing i did, which may be a little hit and miss with the people on here, is spray my dash red. This is the parts taken out and ready to go

I put a lot of effort into prep work, cleaned, wet sanded, cleaned again. 4 coats of plastic primer/filler (to remove imperfections) and 4 coats of red, followed by 2 coats of clear coat. It turned out great, here's the dash re-installed

mods for the future;
have 4 brand new shocks and front king springs, need to buy rears, then it's going low.
exhaust
projector headlights
OEM fog lights
short shifter
would like evo seats if i can afford it
CAI/RAM intake
possibly wrap the bonnet matte black/cf black

Any questions just ask, hope you like it

Looks great - not a big fan on red but you have achieved a really nice look to the red dash - well done not over done and not over glossy

Many years ago I had a CH and built it up and it was stunning to drive did a few performance mods and was very happy with it these cars respond very nicely to a few bolt on mods but be careful as the ECU is very sensitive and may not like the mods that you do.

Funny thing is I have now sold my two coupes and gone back to a CH Mivec which is "bog Stock"

I look forward to seeing what else you have in store for the car

Thanks :) ive heard a lightweight flywheel makes a huge difference but that quickly worked its way off my list due to the price.

I was a little worried about the intake/exhaust work for that exact reason! Haha. Ive seen quick a few ch lancers at work with intakes and they're never healthy cars which is a shame.

Thanks again though :) and good luck with your new toy :)

when I went back too NA after being turboed - the car was healthy - I had a bigger T/B, 21/2"exhaust and RPW extractors 41mm tubes, lightened undercrank pulley, injen intake pipe SRI with a k&n pod. I did have the light weight flywheel (which I still have) and I must say the throttle response was incrediable, it did have and run perfectly fine even with the engine check light on the A/F ratios were on the border but I could live with that.

Interior looks the good man!

IMO keep the red bonnet, this theme works heaps better with the black breaking up the red rather than a couple big blocks of black.

Good work man, keep reading around threads and get some good ideas! If you wanted to go full black and red nuts have a gander at Rigbys thread, his is done very well aNd everythig is themed

Thanks guys, i take great pride in the interior! Everyone that hops in says its like factory haha. Very very clean. Ill definitely be lurking through the threads, quite a few nice builds here :)

A little update - slowly getting this dodgy ass boot done. Still not complete and not happy with it, but it's taking shape fairly well. need to adjust the depth of the sub box, properly fit the face of the sub to the backing plate, and properly secure the backing plate to the sub box and floor.. then do some adjustments to the floor so i can actually get my spare out.

Anyway, seeing as i have 4 days off (lucky me, i know).. i decided to use what materials i had lying around to try and do some more on this boot. I might try finish it off by Monday, or i might leave it for another month. There's a little meet coming up so i'd like to do it this weekend.

Started by finishing the floor which meant putting carpet on the center bit of mdf and putting a hinge on it for ease of access. would like to put a handle on it to make opening it easier. Fairly easy, same process i used for the rest of the floor. Contact adhesive on the carpet and the mdf.. wait for it to dry, then stick it together.

I also felt as though the sub needed a little red, so i sprayed the silver face of it red, here it is before
boot3_zpscfhzvkrs.jpg

The paint turned out horrible so i'll fix that later (need more paint), but for now it doesn't look so bad at a distance.

Next was to mock up the backing plate with some cardboard. got the rough shape i was after;
boot4_zpscmiltzsr.jpg

Then transferred it to some mdf and sat it in the boot to trial. It was oversized and i couldn't close the boot cause of the height. so i cut, refit, cut refit and so on about 20 times before getting it just right. it's too shallow for my liking in the middle, but i'll get to that later.
boot5_zpsxs06lltg.jpg

next i took the speaker out of the sub box and traced it on cardboard. then cut that out and transferred it onto the backing plate. measurements were crucial here as i needed the right height for the plate to sit properly on the floor, and the right spot width-wise, or the plate wouldn't sit properly on the sides. the circle i cut turned out great, but i may/will change the way it is bolted in

Still need to do all my little adjustments and carpet that backing plate, then i'm done and dusted with this damn thing. hopefully it turns out okay, but my OCD already hates that the 2 sides aren't symmetrical

Wow!! Clean car, I'm diggin it.

Boot installs are annoying but if done right, produces great results. Man i love what you done with lid/hinge, looks so OEM.

Haha yeah OCD always gets the better of me but your doing well. Keep it up!!

Car looks sweet dude, I love the dash colour - turned out really well.

I need to do something with my boot interior, stop the bottom from moving around everywhere. Grr...

Yeah i love the latch. definitely wanna get it completely finished so i don't have to keep thinking about it haha.

thanks guys

Lids pretty nifty. Nice work. Would definitely stick to a red bonnet as hughsey said the black works best when it subtlety breaks up the other colour.

Love the lid, very nice. Once its carpeted, the asymmetrical-ness should disappear and your OCD can cope a bit better haha. Might be a bit hard now but, I would look at maybe changing the hinge to a piano hinge, then the mechanism is pretty much invisible.

As Hughsey and jimmy said keep the black for accents.

Finished mine and did it with a handsaw :troll:

Black the hinge or put it under the carpet. Pretty tasteful stuff happening here though.

and it turned out great! apart from the hassle of getting the wood home it was a great success hahaha

yeah definitely keeping the hood red, i want to get a bronze hinge and mount it underneath but i'll be left with the holes in the carpet :/ so i think i'll just spray it black and be done with it

Alright so took a while for me to get around to taking a photo and updating this, so here's the finished boot.
very different to the original idea i had for the sub mount. pretty happy with this :)
