Idling problems 4G93

get new idle control motor or throttle position sensor, its aparently a very common thign with CE's my auto elec said

mine has had that problem twice in 2 years now and both times it was the idle control motor and or the throttle position sensor

The weird thing is that this only started after I had the spark plug leads changed. The mechanic also did the fuel filter at the same time. I am just wondering if it is co-incidence that it failed right after that, or if maybe something got damaged / not re-plugged in while they were working on it. I noticed in the service manual that to replace the filter you need to "Remove the air intake hose and canister."
Never had this issue at all until I had these things done.

Really wish I had a bit more mechanical knowledge, but I'm getting there slowly ^_^

(not the mechanic I would have chosen but I lost a cylinder on a drive down to the gold coast and kinda panicked, didn't really wanna drive it back to brissy on 3 cyl so took it to the first mech I could find, kinda regretting it a little now)

*edit*
Anyone know of a good mech on the north side of brissy? hehe

i would start off going to an auto electrician, if its something wrong with the throttle position sensor or idle speed controller he will be the guy u want working on ur car

if he says its either of those things and tells u he needs to order a part in, u can tell him u will get the part urself and go to a wreckers and get a whole new thottle body with all the sensors
and then its a quick direct swap over no hassles

do u have a 4g15 or 4g93?

Cool as, yeah its a 4g93. Any idea what I would be looking at cost wise for a throttle body?

Now to track down a good auto electrician hehe.

Cheers man! Really appreciate the help!

dunno, man, i have 1 4g93 at my local wreckers, they probably want $50 for it, which is fair reasonable
but if u can use 4g15 sensors (i suspect u can in some cases) then there is a billion throttle bodies with sensors at my wreckers

gl with getting it fixed

Was just chatting to me bro about this who is my encyclopedia when it comes to car things (even if he is a Toyota nerd hehe) and he suggested it may be something to do with the coolant temp sensor, would this maybe be something else to check? He reckons maybe the car is having a hard time figuring out the temp and therefore acting screwy. Also said maybe it could be a break in the coil of the isc that is re-connecting itself when it expands after it warms up.

might aswell check that stuff while ur at it, there is always a laundry list of things that could be wrong from 1 symptom a car has

i have the same problem man..amit (crazyas) and i are having the same problem. ill report back when i test drive it tonight to work if it goes all good. might just need a throttle body cleaner or the maf sensor cleaner which is a lot cheaper than having to buy the part and paying monies to the mechanic. ill even facetime or whatever so i can guide you thru..will save you money in the end i think! lol

Going by the service manual the tps and isc should be interchangeable.

The tps is pretty straight forward to test - just requires a multi meter with resistance check.

That being said, just had a bit more of a read through the manual, if there is a fault with the tps that would result in the check engine light illuminating (although a fault condition is never clear cut with electrical issues, so still possible, just unlikely)

If you download a copy of the service manual there is also a procedure for checking the isc - again, only requires a multi meter

That being said, if you don't feel confident in diagnosing the fault, might be time to head to an auto elec.

Reason i said may fit is becuase there are 2 or 3 different types of tps sensors
all of which fit into the TB slightly different

found this out when i had issues with mine
ISC's should interchange easy tho

Had a similar thing happen to me. The guy called it the "step-up idle motor" or something. I just know it as the idle motor. Cost $250 for a 2nd hand or $450 brand new. I got 2nd hand.

Situation was, if I didn't keep the revs up (1500+) the engine would cut out. Then I'd have to wait about a minute before I could start her up again. Happened when I had to stop to give way at a very traffic-heavy roundabout. Commuters were not impressed :p So there I was, revving at lights, intersections, you name it. Everyone probably thought I was a giant tool trying to get people to race off at the lights. -_-

Prying open a dead thread.

Yesterday my 4G93 was having idle issue, started fine but by the time I got to the shops (30 min late) it wouldn't idle properly, actually stalled a couple of times with the AC on. It would drop to 500rpm or less before dying. It had a service including new fuel filter a few months back, tank is 3/4 full and I've never had this issue before.

When I got home I adjusted the idle screw (never done it before on this car) it's idling a bit high right now when the AC is off, just hope its not an expensive fix but I do have the M21s engine I could always put it.

nice man

Igor is running into the same issue. i've found a $90 USD direct OE replacement. this might be the better fix than going to a junkyard and paying $50 for one, then finding out it has the same issue.
