2011 Used Car Safety RatingsHyundai Excel and Accent models from 1995 to 2006 have been ranked among the least safe cars in the latest Used Car Safety Ratings.
Mitsubishi Lancer and Mirage CE models from 1996 to 2003 were also given the lowest safety rating in the annual guide.
Seventeen popular small cars and 15 light cars achieved only a one-star safety rating.
Among the safest small cars were Honda Civic models from 2006 to 2009.
The top five small cars also included the Peugeot 307, Volvo S40/V40 and Volkswagen Golf/Bora.
This year, three compact SUVs achieved the full five-star safety rating, including Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. Last year, only the Forester was given the five-star rating.
The 2011 Used Car Safety Ratings covered 184 vehicle models manufactured from 1996 to 2009.
Each was given a star rating from one to five, based on the level of protection offered to the driver in a crash.
“Used cars can be safe and you don’t have to pay a lot of money to get a safe one, you just need to know what you’re looking for,” RAC Head of Member Advocacy Matt Brown said.
“Safety should be top of mind for anyone buying a car, new or old, and this guide will help consumers to make an informed decision.”
The ratings also include cars chosen as Safe Picks which are those vehicles offering the greatest protection to other road users involved in a crash such as pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers.
Five cars were listed as Safe Picks in the small and medium car categories. No large or light cars were given the Safe Pick rating.
The 2011 results were calculated from the records of over 4 million vehicles involved in police-reported crashes in Australia and New Zealand between 1996 and 2009.
The driver protection ratings are recalculated each year based on the most recent crash data available.
