Changing a steering wheel?

Alright,
So my question, Considering i have an airbag ONLY in my steering wheel, is it possible to change your steering wheel? I've heard if you take it off it'll deploy the airbag and you need to get a new airbag installed + engineered or something to make sure its safe.
Is there a way you can safely remove/change the steering wheels without the airbag deploying?

yes you CAN swap out steering wheels
no its not recommended

if you wanna remove it, just disconnect the battery for a good 30min (30min just to be sure) and simply take it off like any other OEM wheel
then whack on a boss kit and new wheel and your set

technically its illegal to take out the airbag because your lowering the safety standard the vehicle that it came out of the factory with

Well i don't want to remove the airbag in anyway. Mainly because if it goes off, it's classed as a write-off? And i'll have the light constantly on.
So what, if i disconnect the battery for awhile it will make the airbag immune from deploying? And i can simply change it?
If that's the case, then thanks

well by disconnecting the battery for long enough, it will dissipate all charge, and without any charge the airbag wont have any power to go off
the airbag is located within the steering wheel, so by swapping out the steering wheel, you will be removing the airbag

as for the 'SRS" light staying on, just remove the globe :p

If you're going to do it, do it right. Get an evo wheel or similar. That way you still have an airbag, the wheel looks good AND you're not going to void your insurance in the case of crash and/or injury

this. plus evo wheels look and feel awsome, so much better then most aftermarket wheels

If you get an evo wheel you don't use a boss kit. Boss kits are for aftermarket wheels. They're like an adaptor for each car to a standard aftermarket wheel fitment.

If everyones suddenly recommending an evo wheel now, why doesn't anyone have one (who could then show how to install it with a shít ton of pics) ?!

I've wanted one for ages and want to know if you still keep horn functionality ect, cuz someone said somewhere you loose it...

So someone buy one or declan, hurry up and install yours and show me how you did it :D

you cant change your steering wheel if it comes with a airbag stock to a non air bag one. thats illegal. but if you do get a evo steering wheel with a air bag like everyone else has said, that should be ok. check your state laws just to be sure

I purposely bought a car without an airbag wheel so I didn't have this problem which is why I don't have an evo wheel. And Paulie doesn't have a car, and when he did it wasn't a lancer or mirage. I was actually on my way to the bank to pay for an evo wheel for my CG when it got flooded and consequently written off lol. If it didn't I could have told you how to do it.

Yea, but for me I'd rather have an airbag even if it meant having an ugly stock wheel. Having an evo wheel then would be win x 2!

Ah damn about your car. Stupid clouds, they need to learn to dump their rain where it's needed like over here :p

Holy crap, be damn careful when playing with airbags and sensors that deal with the SRS system (seat mounts / pre tensioners / belts etc)

-Disconnect the battery
-Remove the fuse for the SRS (airbag) circuit
-Carefully remove the airbag off the steering wheel (keep your head OUT OF the bag deployment area)
-Remove the wire from behind that airbag and place the airbag aside somewhere safe.
-Take the steering wheel off as normal and do what you will.

Installation is a reverse of above.

Take care with the wiring and how it all mounts behind the steering wheel.

If your airbag light is on, find a mechanic with a OBD2 computer reader (or Mitsubishi dealer) and they can reset the light and fault codes assuming there isnt something wrong.

The light being on shows your that there is an error (or was) but the SRS system is disabled and you should get it looked at which is why you need to take it to someone to reset the error

Fire fighters and such people have a special clamp that goes over the steering wheel to prevent such people being killed when the airbag suddenly deploys when trying to rescue people. Airbags are guaranteed of deploying when involved in a crash. Check out Youtube for videos on people setting off a bag and how much force they have.

srs post: do you actually know what it takes to set off an airbag?

they dont just explode by looking at them. still take precautions, yes. but dont think they're a land mine. vr4 guys have been swapping to momo's for years

Voltage signal to the charge makes them go off and no, they don't just go off but I still wouldn't have my head anywhere near it if it does when taking it on/off the harness.

And a correction on my post: Airbags are not guaranteed of deploying when involved in a crash...
