Ce Coupe 1.5 to 1.8 Conversion?

Hey everyone,
I'm fairly new to the scene. I've got a 1996 1.5l GLI Coupe basically stock as tits with 115000ks on the clock. Had no problems with the car at all so far and am looking to get a better feel from my lovely first car.

I'm considering a 1.8 engine conversion. Found a couple offers (currently looking at one for $400, checking what that includes now and what its status is) off a rear ended wreck.

I was wondering if anyone had any pointers, advice, threads to look at etc. on the topic?

As far as I can see (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Reg ... ations.htm) since its an option to have the 1.8 engine a simple letter from my mechanic and a quick engine/VIN check will prove sufficient for VicRoads and of course I'll have to notify my insurance.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Cheers to the New Years!

Took a look through there. Seems to reckon i'd need the ignition/key. Really!? That's a pain!

You might be able to dodgy a connection for it... shouldn't be too hard, but... you could possibly splice the 4g93 engine harness to the 4g15 interior harness... Could help possibly? Though I'm a CH guy, so I'm probs not that accurate!

Hmmm. If I do this.... Massive engine conversion DIY in order I believe! I'm not too savy on ignition. But is the output of the ignition an analog 1 or 0 output or is it a digital code signal? (I'm a techie learning mech... lol)

Hey,
Ive done 3 full 1.5 to 1.8 conversions in 2 coupes and one mirage
Flick me a pm anytime and il give you as much info as you want.

Thanks reign I greatly appreciate that. Like I said. All help here goes towards a (hopeful) DIY tut.
Cheers.

You can apparently "ghetto" the swap and just use the 4g15 distributor in the 4g93 to save rewireing/harnessing for the electronic ignition.

Quick question then. Does the key ignition in the lancer simply connect the battery to the distributor? If so. That's an easy splice. I expected there to be a digital signal that associated the ignition system with the engine to thus prevent 'jacking'. However apparently its not that complex.

Awesome. So thats easy. The wiring for the distributor of the 4g93 and 4g15 should be identical? Can anyone confirm that? Just plug n play?

The immobiliser is what prevents jacking harry.
When the key matches the imob, then the imob will allow the car to turn over. You cant bypass it without removing the immobiliser, or without knowing every single single wire and what it connected to and what it does.

Oh right I see now. Soo the distributors give the same outputs etc on both the 1.8 and 1.5?!?!

the dizzy give spark to each of the 4 cylinders when its time to spark for combustion, & it gives a rpm signal to the ecu to allow for air/fuel ratio's to be adjusted.

Using a 1.8L tacho on a 1.5 gives a different rpm speed on the tacho, so they arent exactly the same output

I believe all he has done is swapped the Crank Angle sensor (which relays back to the ECU the speed, the ECU then sends the coilpacks a signal to spark) for the distributor +crank angle sensor unit from the 4g15.

Also doing this way, i believe you retain the MAP sensor, and so have no need to use the MAF that the 1.8s have.

retaining the map is easier said than done, i dont think the manifold suits it as its meant for MAF

since your using the 4g15 loom and ecu still, all you would have to do is tap it into a vacuum line.

say wut? 4g15 ecu running 93 components?
i feel i missed a critical part of this conversation i'll shut up now

I'm not sure about the retention of the 4g15 ecu? Does anyone have the experience to confirm that the following setup would work?:

4g93 Parts:
4g93 engine + intake/exhaust manifold
4g93 clutch and pressure plate

4g15 Parts:
Distributor
All sensors and everything else..

Unknown??:
Can use either throttle body!?
Can use either ECU???
-If I change the ECU I'd have to change the ignition because of the immobilizer code? I'm not certain about this :S Help me understand haha!

Whats going on with the immobilizer?

4G15 dizzy on the 4G93?????? Just went for a walk out the shed cause I was curious about that idea, I can't really see how that will work though? anyone have any pictures of where/how it mounts?

BTW... Is your car an auto or manual? Reason I ask; I've got a complete wiring loom & ECU here to suit an auto 1.8lt swap & has had the immobiliser bypassed (not sure how, they guy I bought it from did it).

Just some more info, the key barrel isn't really required if you can get your car to a suitable mechanic, they can tell the ECU to talk with the original key barrel
