Brake Upgrade

Hi Everyone,

So I still haven't decided on what engine modifications to do so I'm thinking that I should start elsewhere for now.
I'm thinking that before I upgrade the power I should upgrade the brakes...
Now I've read a fair bit about upgrading the brakes although most just articles just say to upgrade them.
Looking around for pricing I notice I can get kits from rpw to do rear and front to 276mm for my CE mirage for about $2000.

Am I right though that there is probably a cheaper way to do this?
If so does anyone have some good links to pricing or guides?
Should I be looking at magna brakes as some places have suggested?
If so what should I be looking out for?

When I do go ahead I will definitely do a DIY with some pictures. Am quite happy to go out to the wreckers to get parts if necessary.

Thanks

Warwick

id talk to henry man, (hensperformance) if i were to get any performance related stuff done to my car, hes the man i would be going with, from what ive seen hes a kick as mechanic and shares the same passion for lancers/mirages as you do. imo cant find a better option.

dont go RPW, get the parts yourself.... WAY cheaper... like $500 rather than 2k

alternativly ask henry his GRS front upgrade is about $310ish
he can aslo supply rear upgrade if u ask nicely

basically ur stockos are 235mm single pots, which are full of crap
next step up is GSR 256mm singles which are a great cheap upgrade
next up is the evo3 276mm twin pots, super duper good, its what i use added cost tho fr the premo performance

rear upgrade to 260mm discs single pot, big use of money and not a fun conversion tbh, but it looks cool,

henry can supply all of these upgrades

comparison... stocko -> twin pot........ massive difference

if ur not worried about budget, go with them these, if u have a budget, then GSR's are enuf to make a super difference on a budget
rear ddisc conversion shoulc be an after thought TBH, if u feel up to it after this,, rear disc doesnt make too much brake power diiference than drums, just for lolz and coolness

hey res, if you dont mind me asking, how much more for the evo 3 upgrade?

didnt buy them off henry for mine, got them from JD for a steal ($600 for front evos and rear evos all redriled and bracketed to match up so bolt on for me easy)
henry may charge diferent, pretty ure u have to ask him for a quote on the evo's whereas GSR iis set price about the $310 mark

also good to note if ur looking for parts yourself find a "Proton wira / m21"
they have the exact bolt on front and rear brakes for the rear disc conversion and the GSR front upgrade, u will also need a 1" brake master cylinder so u dont fail at braking

if u want twin pots and are keen to rip them off urself, find either an evo3 wreck or a FTO (newer model with mivec) and thats where u find them, possibley similar to mangna twin pots but u will have to check with them i cannot confirm

DO NOT get evo4+ brakes as they wont fit, caliper bolt holes are different and the disc offset is different and dia larger, they are 294mm aslo found on VR4's WILL NOT FIT

Front gsr/proton m21 brakes would be enough for most.

There also the option of FTO although this will change you stud pattern. + is that there is alot more wheels to grab. - would be if you have nice wheels already..

I might have a FTO in my hands maybe at the end of the week if i'm lucky.

If you wanted cheap 276mm, but 5-stud and only single spot, you could just rip them off a CJ Lancer! They'd be like $100.

or that, and u can always get the disc redrilled to suit 4 stud like my evo3's, so no need for stud conversion

Post your location, if in Syd, I can think of 2 protons at the wreckers which have front and rear Discs, 256mm front and 260 rear. can pick the calipers+pads for $30 each, and rotors probs about $20 each

Why wouldn't they? As long as the hub offset and caliper reach is the same... I think they would pattern as many parts as possible, very expensive to redesign every part for every new car..

Easy enough to measure at a wreckers...

Also 276mm twin pots with 260mm single rears on a few supped up CB lancers and Galant.
which im semi keen for, let me know when you go i might pop up.

Mate, Toowoomba is a bad spot for wreckers.. unless you want ute parts! I know, I live there too!

You want a trip down to Capalaba wreckers, the few pick yourself places around Redbank, usually less on the cars though, or out near Mt Gravatt...

Proton Satria or Wira front 256mm will be enough unless you're planning on turbo. This with some decent pads and rotors will generally be enough. You can usually grab a pair of front calipers for around $50 if you're willing to fit them yourself, then just the price of rotors and pads.

I want to experiment on someone's car using some CJ front calipers and rotors.. but they would have to be wanting 5-stud fronts!
