2 pack painting

Reflections can be seen on front of tank... the back looks dull, but believe me.. all very shiny and this was before a final cut.

home sprayed metallic, with minimal equipment.

didnt skyryd do his CE in acrylic?
but then again im not sure how much he drives it, so i dont know how the acrylic would hold against stone chipping/sun fade etc...

Sure, they will stone chip, but so does 2Pack.. even powdercoating.

Funnily, acrylic has more elasticity, so will craze less....

Point is, you need to be almost a seasoned spray paint professional to get decent results in 2Pack, it's vital to have safety gear and is in fact illegal in most states to spray it outside of a properly prepared extraction booth. You also should bake 2Pack to get the best results...

Acrylic, although predominantly used in the 70's and 80's on cars, has come a long way. The modern spray finishes benefit from formed metal that needs very little bogging to get dead flat and also electrostatically charged paint bonding mechanisms.. nothing like the old way of painting.

Least acrylic is cheap, safe and forgiving to paint with...

what about painting acrylic base then clear 2pk over the top for hardness?

pretty sure you can only do that the other way around since acrylic shrinks and 2k doesn't and then itll crack

but if you let the base cure first, all shrinking done?
Why would you do it the other way round? Not worth it may as well clear in 2pk to

it never stops shrinking

I really have done my bit... but am very keen to see your results either way...

Please make lots of pics!

was planning on taking pics...

And i am very well considering acrylic now just for cost reason and maybe a little for ease of use!

i've done 1-1.5 cars in acrylic. never again. it is way too much work. acrylic is easier to spray, but needs a sh*t-load more in preparation. you really need to be very good to pull off a good job acrylic. 2k sprayers can be a bit rougher.

since switching to 2k, i would never go back. yes the gun work takes a bit more skill, but with practice, the results are so much better. sure, you can put in the extra work into acrylic to get it *close* to 2k. but put that extra effort into 2k and it will be even better.

anyways, both have their goods and bads. it's all been said in previous posts. 2k is my preference. i'll let my lancer do the rest of the talking. i'm not a spray painter, just a noob having a punt. my tips are in my ride thread.

SyKrYd, you say acrylic is more difficult that 2K.. funny, my old man and myself think the exact opposite...strange. He is more of a painter than I am, but I am sure spraying boats is not exactly show car quality...

If that's the case and me being a non-spraypainter too..I will take my acrylic work to be of good quality!

just watched mighty car mods show car eps I,II,III and they sprayed this little car, looked like they had some decent spray methods
showed equipment used, spray method, booth setup
and was a funny set to watch :p
(lol not really relevant)

there is no way mdclear will put the effort needed to do aclylic

will be putting in all the effort i got, as this car will be practise for my own. going to paint it 2k unless the price difference is drastic

Mate, you have tons of opinion and data...

FWIW, good luck with whichever system you choose. Please be safe and use protective measures, hate to see you get ill from a paintjob!
