Gday guys,

Today i was driving down to the mrs place and i noticed that it just didnt handle properly around corners so i poped her up and dropped the drivers wheel off and i found this....   :( :( :( :(
I havent yet check the passenger side however i did pop my head under the car an have a quick look and it doesnt look split or damaged like this one.

any ideas on what i may have caused it and what my options are to fix her up?

Also if i continue to drive with the car in this condition will this be a problem???

Ok so what I've gathered is that the car is jacked up in the picture? It could've just been a already damaged shock getting worse... And I'd say yes it'd be bad to drive on it.

Yes the car is completely jacked up in this image, when i bought the car about 2yrs ago it was in A1 working condition the shocks were fine. any idea what would have caused it? and i was just talking to old man, and he said that i should be ok to drive on it for a bit but no longer than 3/6months.
its just that i live out in richmond and that im going to be going on a small holiday up coast about 200ks away. and just needed to be on safe side :)
any ideas on what it might be worth for a new one?

It's fine to drive it like this.. it will wear considerably quicker now.. but that does not mean you will have to change it right this second...

When you notice it's completely worn, then replace... it may still last months like this...

Just replace with same, if you're happy with the ride...

kyb oem replacement shocks are a good brand and relatively cheap
or you can go peddars they are a bit dearer.... or find one of your cars at a wreckers with shocks that look in okay nick if u want the short term budget fix

Ok cool cheers guys, thanx for the reassurance that my shock aint gonna just fall off lol :p
i am pretty happy with the ride however id like it to be lower and they could be a bit harder rather than a soft ride.

Res: you say pedders for the win? where abouts would u say i can get my hands on a set of these?

i dont know much about peddars besides the fact they offer them... i assume check their website
i know they are your average brand heard nothing overly good/bad about them

kyb can be found on their websie also, they also offer sports shocks aswell as oem replacement
but im sure there are a few more brands if you wanted to shop around more

struts don't regulate your ride height, let's be straight on that! You need to get some lowered springs... Kings/Tein/Lovells or Pedders will do.

Then, while you have the strut or shock/spring out, replace them both with your newly purchased and assembled new strut/spring combo! Easy out and easy in....

Tryg, yes i knew that shocks dont adjust ride height but i wanted to adjust it so while i got shocks out i might aswell kill two birds with one stone.
i have always heard lots of good things about pedders... but never had first hand experience with them
any ideas?
id love to just get like kings or something and have them fitted by the place that replaces my shocks. i was told that i cant fit springs myself unless i have a spring compressor is that right?

no... not if you were replacing both your springs and struts at same time..... I found that the lowered spring needed little extra compression to put onto a new strut...but taking the taller spring off the old strut would definitely need spring compressors...

Spring compressors are worth the $60....

i would be replacing them both yes, id love to do it myself as learning curve. i personally have never done it before. so im sure i could learn how todo it with some help.
and i had no idea how much compressors were so for only 60 i may aswell get some. :)

$60 each.. you will need two.

Also, have these;

A jack (trolley jack is better for speed)
car stands
torque wrench
Assorted Sockets/Spanners (both ring and open)

Just like to point out if your taking the springs off yourself with spring compressors be VERY careful, compressing springs gives them A LOT of potential energy, and if one of the hooks on the compressors isn't on correctly the spring will snap out and cause a lot of damage to whatever it hits, i recommend watching some youtube videos to get familiar on how to properly install spring compressors. SO beware compressing springs IS dangerous if done incorrectly, good luck.

if he is not taking out his old ones... not really an issue..

He is mounting new low springs onto new struts... there wont be too much energy, because you can top-hat them without compression.

But James makes a good point.

still good to watch some tube vids on how to do it

and you want to compress the stock springs REAL well before u rattle gun of the top hat, if u dont compress them enuf it could shoot up in your face

also best to rattle gun them with the shock laying on its side (on the ground) so that if something does go wrong it isnt facing directly at you

ok cool will do and yes ill be getting new shocks and lower springs make it easier to do. and yes i intended on watching some tube vids to learn a bit about how to do it :)
but cheers for the info aye alot of help. and yes tryg i have all that cept for the compressors. any ideas on what id be looking at for new shocks and springs? like as in total price?
