Got my new stereo today, and I just put all the wires together and it's not working.
No ideaaa what I'm doing and all the wires are such a mess (whoever put the old stereo in did a *poo* job organizing the wires!!)
Yessssssssssss I realize I could of got it done professionally but I'm too impatient and don't want to wait another week lol.

got pics of how u wired it up?
coz thats a pretty broad question, could be any one of a hundred things

nope don't have any pics.
i'm just confused about the wiring, like from the new wires to the old car wires.
i don't have an adapter thing for all the wires, so basically its just cutting and wrapping all the wires to the right ones.
for example; the new yellow wire, what old wire from the car does it connect to??

well i think basically you should connect the ground first (usually black)
connect the red to existing red (being power)
and the yellow is (i think) the memory wire and i have mine hooked upto my clock so it keeps all my settings

if you in doubt get a test light or a multi meter
depending on how you set it all up, you could of blown the HU, or something as simple as a fuse, its a little hard to tell without moar info

ah you are talkign about connecting up a head deck by the sounds of it

TBH you should have got a connector, makes it sooooooooooooo sooooooooooooo soooooooooo sooooooo (have i made my point) much easier

but since your doing it the hard way, you disconnect your battery, and start putting them together 1 by 1 matching the same colour and same stripe ones
but if you have already done all that then you have a bad connection in 1 or more of the joins

does the head deck turn on? and just has no speaker sound?
coz if it doesnt turn on it means that either the earth or power wire has a bad connection (red = positive, black= negative) need both with good connection to turn it on

also check fuses, there will be one or 2 at the back fo the head deck prolly

peace out!

Don't get the adapters. Waste of money and replacing a head-unit is a fairly simple task (depending on how complex your head unit is. I imagine one with a LCD screen may require more work).

It's simply, as Res said - connecting red to red, blue to blue, etc. Your error may have been made in connecting the wrong wires together (some wires are the same colour but have a white/black stripe up the middle of them. Can get easily confused).

But, I think your problem lies here;

Wrapping? Please don't tell me you are just pushing the wires together and wrapping them in some sort of electrical tape. The best way to install one is to solder it - however this can be hard when working inside the car so you can do what I did and use butt connector terminals (use red ones). For this you just strip one wire to about 15mm or so, place it in the butt connector and using a crimping tool squeeze the metal inside the connector until it holds the wire firmly (try pulling on it with moderate force). Repeat this with the matching coloured wire and you've got the next best thing to soldering.

I assume you know what butt-connectors and crimpers are, but just in case:

Also remember to disconnect your battery before doing so. Cutting in to the wires can be dangerous when there is still a current running through them. Best to be safe.

Really unless you are using a multimeter to work out which wires have the power, ground, etc and then using a 9V battery to do a pop test to see which wires go to which speakers then please don't try hacking up the cars wiring! Do yourself a favour and just buy a $20 adaptor harness, which has the benefit of allowing you to easily pull out your deck and replace the stock one when you sell the car down the track,etc...

Also as Graham said, I hope you are soldering (preferably) or using crimp-lugs to join the wires together!!!

should have bought an adapter is all i have to say, its WAY neater and takes about 10 seconds to install

and there cheap as... moral of this story, don't be impaitent things always take longer then

I'll take a photo tomorrow morning, I really have no idea what the hells going on with all the wires.
There isn't an old yellow wire from the car..So where on earth do I put the new yellow wire??
Also one of the wires disconnected my clock :/

Went to Supercheap and Repco today too, and they don't have those adapters for my car, so there goes that idea..

well i've got it to power on, but it only powers on for a few seconds and then goes off..

i think i may just go to autobarn and get them to install it !

Thumbs up to the connector. They are colour coded to your factory wires and take out the guess work. These days you can even buy two for a straight plug in. Ie. Stereo to universal, then universal to factory loom. $20 each but worth it.

Otherwise, you will need a test lamp at min and will have to cut the factory harness. To do so..

1. switch car off but leave battery connected.
2. Connect earth of test lamp to body
3. Test every wire until you find the one that lights up. That's you constant.
4. Leave the pos connected and connect your earth to each wire until it lights up. This is your earth
5. With earth connected, turn ignition to accessories and repeat. This is you accessories.
6. Turn on lights and repeat. This is your illumination

once you have these then consult your diagram and connect up. Then it's repeating the steps for speakers. Unless your powering off amps

dont give up yet

if its doing that, it will be your ignition (trigger) wire (yellow wire i think from memory)

Don't really need illumination unless your worried about the HU being to bright at night.
