Buying Lancer (Advice Please)

Hi Guys
I am just new to this don't really know what i am doing in the Lancer scene it is very exotic to me.
I previously had a 1972 HQ Holden Ute which i have done up and now just sold because damn a straight 6 202 red engine can go through some fuel. especially now that i am driving to Brisbane from Hervey Bay (350KLMs) once or twice a week fuel is murdering me.

So i have recently sold the old girl :( very reluctantly and now looking for a lancer been perusing car sales for a while now and have found a few options considering i only got 6 grand for my ute.

One option i really liked was this, http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/pri ... e&__Nne=15 (dont know how i should post it properly, sorry).

Coming from very classic cars i do not have a clue how this car will handle the long trip each week to Brisbane on fuel and reliability wise. Secondly, i have read up on them and every body seems to be saying they are fairly undernourished being only the 1.5l engine. what mods for 1grand all up will keep the fuel economy down yet still give me a bit more punch. or would i just be much better looking for a bit newer 1.8l CE.

Sorry for the really long post it is my first go at this.
Any help would be appreciated,
Brandon

welcome to the forum dude.
i'd look for a 1.8l. and if you find one in your price range MR is the go for all the extra features.
the one you linked to there looks like a good little buy.

Welcome. That one you've linked would be a good start. Being an MR, they are top of the line in the coupes, with the full black interior, electric windows, etc. They come with a 1.8L already from factory, so bit more punch than the 1.5 engine. One common thing in the CE series is roof rust, so check the turrets for any if you inspect it.

def go 1.8L MR
they are quite reliable and fuel they do about 500~550kms to a $40-$45 tank

Being just new to this and looking around the forums would something like a CAI Hens Stainless Pipe thingy and i dont know a whole new exhaust system give the 1.5 much more power closer to the 1.8. also how much would mods like this effect the fuel economy

i drive a 1.5l and find its plenty good enough to drive.
at the end of the day you wont complain with a 1.5l.
only reason they'd go away from it is it loses a bit of power when climbing hills with aircon on.
but from brissy to hervey you shouldn't run into this problem a hole lot.
1.8 just has that bit more zip at top end speeds for overtaking on the highways to.

oh yea i'd have to add in the interior colour of the gli's is grey. black is alot nicer.
and as everyone else has said the MR is the go for all the features

thanks for that Lancer99 with 230000 odd KLMs on the clock what sort of problem should i look for.

also do you have any mods on yours to give it that bit more zip

mines just about to push over the 200000km mark and i haven't had any issues with it except for general maintenance you gotta expect with an engine with so many k's.
as for mods jus stick to what you would do with most engines. lightweight pulley's etc. works a treat. or if you want to go all in turbo

@ 230000km its getting old, though since you don't know what type of km's it is, just run over the basics, timing belt, service history, previous owners, check for leaking fluids, crunchy of box, lack of smoothness in autos, cv joints, the list goes on, but the basics would be the best...

for 5k you'd be able to get a CH/CG which might have a bit less on the clock, they'll be a 2L (still fuel efficient, mine pulls on avg 11L/100km in the city), but the down side is that they are a sedan (or wagon) and may not be as sporty, also you'd be looking at the base models for CH/CG's, VRX's add bout ~2k, and I think ~3k for velocity (i think?) which have black plastics and suede seats (what I'm looking for :D )
Good luck on yo search :) and welcome! hope we can be a help to you. (BTW hq, nice i like dem cars, but yes it loves da fuel :p )

I would definitely get the MR out of those two. The only things really done to the 1.5 is the spoiler and the wheels, and in my opinion the MR kit looks much better than the evo style spoiler it has. If you really want the spoiler, they're not that expensive to get and plenty available. The MR also comes with the factory side skirts, front lip and rear pods. That spoiler just looks out of place without the rest of the kit

I have the 1.8L, filled up yesterday, cost 46 bucks (for 34L) and made 390k's. But that's all city driving stop start stuff. If you do more highway driving it would obviously get quite a lot more.
From the two there, I'd personally go the MR, has all the little features, a lot less k's than the other (230,000km is a lot), a black interior and the 1.8L engine.

There are 5 Main options so far i have found.
i dont really want something blinged up to much look wise on the outside due to the misses really being against a super hotted up looking car.

99 GLi 1.5l 230000klms this is the one i like most quite simple on the outside which i really like.
just not happy about the 1.5l SOHC engine.

99 MR 1.8l 182000klms did not like the looks on the outside of the car i wanted a slight bit more blinged up then this and was just planing on spending left over money on mods for the engine.

00 MR 1.8l 208000 klms liked the look of this but again i am am worried about the amount of klms
http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/pri ... e&__Nne=15

these last two cars were both a bit to hotted up on the outside for my liking and a little to expensive but still posibilities.

03 GLi 1.8l 146000klms except for being a bit to nice on the outside and a bit to dear i really liked this one.

03 MR 1.8l 162000 klms i really liked this one aswell like car wise but a bit to expensive

Suggestions please thank you so much for the help

No chance getting a cg ch for 5k over here skip..

1.5 > for fuel economy and no power
1.8 > so you can atleast overtake quicker and still have decent fuel economy.

the MR probably could get for $4500 easy as to me MR's are bit over priced same with general CE gli's. Must be the fuel going up which is making the prices go up for something.

MR is the ducks nuts in that era.

is the last one actually an MR? it doesnt have the power windows/mirrors, has no black interior, no 1.8l engine, no fog lights... i think they lied

Original MR green is my pick should get that easy for $4500 if not 4k. Get a rev's check spotted a towies truck in the back I dont trust them.

1.5 is great for highway if no overtaking having had both a few times 1.8 is the pick no doubt about it. MR is the top of the range back in that era.

Electric windows, black interior, sports lip kit and cupholders for the win! also has a split rear seat 60/40 which is handy pending what you my buy in the future or surf.
