Two questions...

One: today I noticed that if I rev the car on idle my lights go brighter then dim once I stop giving it gas... would this be a good sign the alternator is on its way out or is it normal? (I dont have a multimeter so at the moment Im just wondering what people's experiences are)

Two: I have also noticed that lately shifting isnt as smooth as it used to be, is there any way to check trans fluid because I'm getting concerned?

Thanks!

1- that is normal, i have a brand new alt and mine still does it

2- on top of your gearbox there is a bolt, unscrew and poke your finger in it, if you cant feel fluid you have a leak, top it up and get it looked at

sound system draining power?
sheet battery?

a capacitor or larger battery should help fix that

if ur concerned get it checked and maybe gbox oil changed, if its not that bad just learn to deal with it

Hmmm my lights are a bit flickery at idle, but my battery is pretty much rat *poo* from the stereo...not by any chance just a crappy old battery you have is it?

Cool thanks. I'll probably leave checking the oil til it light. Thanks for the info!

EDIT: I have no clue about the battery. It came with the car when I bought it at the start of the year. No big stereo or anything. Seems like its nothing I should worry about from what you guys are saying.

As for trans. I think its coz its been cold. Generally shifting is nicer once the car is warm, still Id like to change it coz I have no clue when it was done last. The main thing I worry about is that while the car is still cold and I chuck it in third as quickly as when its warm it makes a grinding like sound, though if I take it easy it seems to be ok. I hope my gears arent rooted :-|

once the car is running almost all the power comes straight from the alt, its a lack of volts due to the low rpm that causes the lights to dim

Nah you still need the battery too if you want reliable power, the alternator won't respond to current changes instantly...I've certainly noticed in my car at idle if I turn the stereo up, that after a short period the alternator will pick up (you can audibly hear the load on the engine increase)...

Upgrading the grounding wires on the car can also improve the lights flickering.

Had the same problem on my old prelude. Ran a grounding kit to replace all the stock groundings and it pretty much eliminated it. Also improved Electric windows etc at the same time. Simple to do and you can DIY with kits from ebay or make up your own shielded wires. Just search up Grounding Kit on ebay..
