Timing belt/chain replacement

Hey guys,

Just had my 75000 service today(i know it's pathetic lol) and read that the timing belt should be change now. If it take it to any mechanic are they able to easily source the product/ is their a place i can buy oem parts so i can book it in when it suits me or do i have to take it to those ********s at Mitsubishi?

Cheers

(The thoughts about Mitsubishi dealership mechanics is my opinion and not necessarily Mitsubishi's)

most mechanics will have access to aftermarket Gates brand timing belts.

It wont be a chain in our cars.

I would suggest you either take a Gates belt or ask them to source a Gates belt before you go in... give them a heads-up.

They will be less than the cost of an OEM.

Funnily enough, Gates makes belts as OEM for just about all manufacturers that I can think of!!

Good luck.

Cj lancers have chain's which are a non serviceable item, designed to last the life of the engine. If u were to replace it, it will cost u thousands trust me. Done one under warranty took 3 days todo and cost well over 2k for memory.

I stand corrected! Thanks for clearing it up LWNSLW.

Same reason I love Fords, never had to change a chain yet, even with the abuse I gave my supercharged 6, it was very strong.

Out of interest, just for information, is the CJ a non-interference head or is the reason they are choosing to use a chain because it is in fact an interference head design?

Chain ftw. Tryg how could you not know that?

Parra where did you read we needed to change the "belt"?

just checked both the Gates site and the online service manual...

Gates lists no belt (means chain) and also the service manual shows chain, I'm so dumb...!

@Dave, because all little cars have belts, or so I thought (having rebuilt a lot of toyotas/hyundais etc).

Chain is better, but can get a little noisy and eventually does need to be replaced if the tolerance stretches out and interferes with the timing...

Oh, BTW, I have the LHD version of CJ service manual on disk... happy to send out to any that do not have.

Cheers, sorry for corrupting with my dumbness!

im unsure about the heads if they are interference or not but if i get bored ill look it up in my manuals

I would guess they are looking at the compression ratio, but I guess either looking in the manuals or ripping the head off will provide an answer.

The service manual is generic that comes with all Mitsus. As of such their is mention about replacement of the belt which can easily get you confused!

Oh and yeah poor form Mr Tryg :p Just stirring you!

Tryg, our forgiveness can be purchased by a one time offer of a $500 life membership to the club, which will be spent on evo wings and applying vinyl to the roof of our cars. ;)

Dave, you need a trip to my place... I have enough of that 3M Di-Noc to cover a couple of cars!

I might have a work trip coming up, hopefully to Singapore... If so, I am going to go across the causeway into Malaysia, Johor Baru. That is where that big Lancer shop (VoxMotorSport) is.... they have Projector HID headlights, OEM quality (without the need for auto-levelling, and none of that demon eyes, led rubbish).

They have so much for CJ Lancers, I think I will have to bring an extra whole bag to stuff in the cheap goodies..!

I see also, out of interest, they are stamping out RA bonnet replicas... interesting.

I will give you all a heads-up if I am going, probably around March... crossing my fingers, I definitely WANT STUFF!

Thankyou for clearing that up. When do timing chains fail/ what should i be aware of coming up to the 90 k mark and what do i need to do at a 75 thousand service cuz all i had was a oil change. I definitely know the brakes need changing perhaps the coolant and brake fluids as well?

the biggest thing in CJ Lancers is the need to do regular oil and filter changes, coolant every two years and CVT/SST oil every 50,000km if you're banging it!

Timing chains do not fail, they can stretch though... but I have seen Falcon taxis with over a million with the same timing chains... The tensioner may need some adjustment, but the chain will last the life of a motor...

Definitely do your brake fluid yearly, its SUCH A SIMPLE PROCESS!! Oils, be they; motor, gearbox, transaxle, power steering, brake fluids etc, are inherently hygroscopic - meaning they readily absorb moisture. Your motor, running on a long trip, does dispose of most water in the engine oil, same with gearbox and transaxles.. but brake fluid does retain a lot, meaning rust can be a problem and also braking efficiency can suffer.

For the $30 it costs to change, I manage to get premium braking performance by changing this fluid yearly.

I guess if the chain went, then that would be the life of your engine? :?

Mine (CH) just got serviced for the 100,000km service, got oil, brakes, filters, and radiator top up. Mechanic said that with lancers (dunno if just mine or what) Timing belts and most belts should be changed at every 100,000km. So mine's going back in soon

pretty sure on CH and older use a belt not a chain so it would break alot easier.. just safer to change them more ofter i guess..

I heard that brake fluids are a absolute beech because of the air pockets that can happen but alright then.

have you never changed fluid...!?

It is dead-set easy to do, without creating air pockets. If you are unsure, then get a mechanic to do...

I have a vacuum reservoir pump, so I can do it alone, one-shot, no air pockets.

The accepted other way is to have a mate pump the brake down, as you open the nipple... At the bottom of the stroke, he holds down as you tighten and the you call 'release'. That vacuums more fluid to the start position and you redo, as many times as required until fresh (no bubble) fluid shows in your clear tube (from nipple to waste container).

Mechanics charge like wounded bulls, because they hate taking off tyres to do such a simple job.. so you pay for the privilege. My way, $20. A mechanic, $90.

But, do only if you're comfortable. If you lived closer, I could do in 40-mins, with your help. I am sure there are others who can....

Nothing on cars is hard or dark-science, except maybe auto-gearboxes, because you need so many unique-function tools (which you cannot get over the counter at Supercheap!

I do not consider fixing cars difficult, if you have the knowledge or experience. Hearsay, like 'I heard it was a *mum* to do', only comes from others who are not yet versed or couldn't be stuffed doing, so they say its dangerous/difficult (to make them feel better about not knowing).

If you hear that again, from someone, Parralegend.... tell them they are annoying and stupid!!!

Just my 2c
