guys, i have this tick tick sound coming from my drivers side front or rear maybe wheel, i initially thought it was just a stone in the tyre tread causing this ticking but no stones visible. any ideas of what this could be ? thanks.
thanks. this ticking is very faint but abit annoying . all wheel nuts are very firm / cv,s seem to be in top nick as i dont get any ticks in full lock turns , just thinking maybe it could be the wheel bearings ? they sort of feel abit noisey when you coast down to a set of lights and i wouldn,t have a clue how long its been since they were replaced , if ever.
jack the car up and see if you can wobble the wheel. if you up and down movement its the bearing if you dont and you have front n back wobble its something in the steering.
no free play atall in up / down or left / right . as mentioned this tick tick is just like a stone in the tread , 1 x tick for each revolution of the wheel. i think i might replace the front bearings, do i need a torque wrench to re tension the outer nut ? or can you just do it up nice and firm ? thanks guys.
The nut is normally marked, so just use a breaker bar. I reckon its not as bad as it seems - i've had tik tik tiks on all my cars before and is always a piece of plastic/ziptie
a wheel bearing makes a thud thud sounds and goes away when the load is removed from the wheel ie. if its your drivers side it will go away when you turn right cause the load is transfered to the left wheel. have you checked the wheel for a nail? they can be hard to see some times will make a tick tick sound and the wheel will still hold air while the nail is in there.
FOUND the little bugger tick tick, yes it was a stone but of all things it had to be a darn Black stone to blend in with the black tyres hey. i certainly know my tread pattern off by heart now after going through this step by step proccess.
