some basic help :)

Okay, so I am looking to maybe put a basic CAI, just a new intake into the stock filter, is it as simple as getting rid of the standard intake that is inside the engine bay ad also that black box under the wheel arch and piping a new one into behind the fog light spot and meshing it? Speaking of meshing the foggies, how hard is it? is it just putting it behind the foggie spot and screwing it in?

on a side note, how can you improve a stock exhaust sound? If possible at all. I have removed the resonator to no real difference...

Cheers

Yes and yes pretty much. The cheapest of way to make exhaust louder if that's what your getting at is a exhaust tip of some kind obv no performance gain but will make it louder next option would be a rear muffler change which you can make it sound as loud as you like. but stay away from cannons cause one they sound like *poo* and two you'll soon get over the drone especially at highway speeds

HAve you got any recommendations for a good exhaust tip and also a muffler replacement? I just ant to make it sound sportier not like you said this horrible drone that annoys everyone including me. hahha

Cheers

lukey mufflers are relativly cheap and good
magnaflow mufflers are on the expencive side but are excelent

plenty of other brands out there, just find a style you like that has a price that matches ur budget
and is in the right inlet/outlet diameter sizes for your exhaust

If you do put some flexible pipe from the fog light hole to the air box, just clean your filter somewhat regularly.

After having my intake like that after about 4 months I took out the filter, banged it upside down on the ground and a whole lot of sand and a few bugs n stuff came out. I'd say that's what the 'resonator' is for, for any particles that it might collect to drop into that box.

i dunno what your doing wrong, i have had my filter on for over a year now and it is only fed by a pipe at my fog hole and is enclosed (so if there was dust and bugs and sand it'd be on the filter or in the canister)

nothing, filter looks almost brand new still after a year

Really? Hmm it wasnt a hole lot of sand, but enough to want to take 5 seconds every 4 months to clean it.
Maybe it's just because Perth is so bone dry all the time, unlike where you might be so sand off the road flicks up a bit more.

It's nothing to worry about anyway, it's not like the sand is getting past the filter, I hope.

lol saying that any where in ear shot of said s1uts will result in you spending a lot of time becoming a excellent owner operator .

I used cable ties to attach some mesh to the foggie holes, and i put flex pipe from the stock air box to the front left fog hole and it has increased power a little, and has made the exhaust note sound better. I put a piece of stocking on the end of the flex pipe near the road to stop bugs and crap getting into the filter :) Check my ride thread to see how i done the mesh and stuff >> viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2514&start=30

Has anyone got a link to a replacement air filter for my 99 CE Gli? Is it worth replacing the stock one if I am going to do this DIY CAI just running it from the foggie whole to the filter box.

Cheers

IS this is?

A1311 is the ryco product code for the ce air filter replacement
so that one is spot on ;)
z411 for ryco oil filter
and
z515 for ryco fuel filter

(just some fyi :D )

Nothing wrong with a few bugs / sand / grit in your filter. Just means your pipe is directing the air quick enough for said debris to be flowing up the pipe to hit your filter. Overall, less restriction = good flow and thats what your ultimately after right?

Think of people like me with a filter which runs across the front of the radiator in my other car (Commodore LS1). Have found locusts, moths and beatles caught up and clean my filter every couple of months or so.
