single din standalone gps

Anyone know of somewhere I can get such a thing? Basically after a single din GPS preferably running windows CE pop out/up screen or something similar. Would prefer something that doesn't double as a head unit/amp to keep costs down. Can't be bothered with the tacky interfaces you get with the chinese units so don't want to replace the whole thing, happy with my clarion. Its a long shot but if anyone knows of any that are available let me know :)

sorry, I am stumped. I know what you want, but not many companies would make a DIN GPS alone.

Most 7" touchscreen headunits now can just plug in a module and double up as GPS.

I bought the module for my Kenwood, but I actually just use my iPhone as a GPS (TomTom on iPhone).

Love Tomtom on the iphone - dims the music to give instructions, there no way I can possibly get lost!!!

I also bought Navigon and another, for the iPhone... its a bit more versatile, as you can use it also on a boat and walking/cycling etc... I have a motorcycle mount, bike mount, car mount (getting crazy!)

forgot about this thread....

id rather an inbuilt one mdclear as it's always got constant power running to it, is always setup when I need to use it. It was so convenient in the lancer, especially since I work for myself and do a fair bit of driving when I've got no clue where I am.

That pioneer one looks nice but crazy price.....when i can get this and use good old igo amigo....http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.51440 i don't think I could ever justify it.

Would be a great product if it did exist, albeit a niche. would think there'd be some chinese equivalent. Best i've found so far is a complete head unit for ~300 but was aiming for inbuilt speakers.....sometimes I think I ask for too much :).

also....Although I can use my phone I've always preferred a dedicated solution. guess im old school there

Can you get AUS maps for that?

And yeah like I said, when you can buy stand alone units so cheap no point in the manufacturers making inbuilt units as they'd cost way too much.

yeah they run wince so can get pretty much anything for them with a little bit of mucking around. The inbuilt gps on my chinese unit had a similar setup.

although I don't see why an inbuilt unit would cost that much, isn't it the same thing in a different shell? only extra bit would be the motor to pop the screen out but at the price of pop out lcds I don't think this would be a huge cost.

Probably because they already have proven standalone products.

Why re-invent the wheel and offer a product with limited features when there are countless manufacturers who offer a product that is similar with more features and works extremely well.

It's a very niche product. Not many people would be able to implement it well either

- where is the sound going to come from,
- do you wire it into the speakers along with your existing stereo (this opens up a whole lot of dilemna's to do with wiring)
- how do you counteract the gps not cutting out the music playing so you can hear the directions if you wire it into existing speakers
- do you use an external speaker (more crap to install)
- inbuilt speaker (most likely to work the best)

For a car where you didn't have a stereo, yeah this might be an option. But even then you could probably mount one of the bigger GPS screens where the stereo would be with a little modification.

It really doesn't have a target market...that's pretty much all it comes down to.

also if u had a gps in ur din, on most cars u would have to look down to see the map
hence why they are designed to go on ur windscreen, easy visibility of map and road at same time

You only really need a quick glance at the screen to see how far you have to go, not to mention a lot of the cues to turn etc are a voice talking to you. I've never had a problem with mine being mounted in the dash, not in either of my old man's Honda's either. Slight glance to the left and you're set, the same as if you were to check your speed. :)

yeah mine was great in the dash, wouldve been nicer higher but its not a big deal. I agree on the inbuilt speaker option, all you'd have to do to wire it is add power + use the same signal wire as the HU does wouldn't you.

Most would be able to implement it well I'd think, majority of cars have a spare din from what i've seen. Either way debating it isn't going to make someone create one sadly lol :(.

Yeah but if they ran on the same speaker signal wire you'd just end up with the sound from both sources coming through all together. It would need some sort of automatic switch in there so that when the gps comes in the head unit cuts out - not sure where you'd find something like that. Without it you'd just end up with a whole mess of sound all coming through together.

I have never heard of such a unit as what you're after. 99% of people who would want something like this would want everything all in the one unit to save space and have it all integrated in together - so not really any sort of market for it. Plus the way cars are going I doubt you'll ever find one, hardly any new cars on the market even have the double din setup anymore, with everything going to more stylish setups with the unit built into the upper part of the dash. I mean now that DVD players have gotten so cheap, you hardly even see a standalone flip out screen for sale anymore. If you want something like this unfortunately I think the only way you will get one is to custom build it yourself

I meant signal wire as in the one that makes the unit turn on. acc....I'd want them both operating at one time! hence standalone :).

and yeah your right the standalone option though is too pricey. ~250 for the signle din popout unit and some cheapass speakers for the voice for say $30 and a whole lot of mucking around mounting them. I'll stick with my tomtom and maybe buy that $60 thing for a map upgrade

I thought all you peeps had iPhones and symbian OS phones now anyway...

I went to that iTunes site, paid $25AUD for a navigation program for the iPhone, lifetime map upgrades... and, it works as well as my NavMan do-dah....

Because the iPhone connects to the HU, via cable and bluetooth, I can set mine to interrupt audio when GPS is on... but that's just whack !!!
