Short Shifter ratios

Well it turns out that the schools welding stuff wasn't working, and the metal lathe hadn't being bought yet meaning i couldn't lengthen the bottom or shorten the top. So we decided to attempt to make a new gear boot out of a suede like material. Got all the sides cut into shape and sowed the first two together. All good, except they were facing different ways meaning one side of suede was on the inside
So really a fairly fail day :p

what do you need a lathe for to lengthen the bottom or shorten the top?

Cut the bottom with a grinder/saw,
Cut a peice of 8mm-ish rod
Grind a V on the joins for weld prep.
Then weld back together when the welders are working

Repeat for top, except dont add a peice in, cut a piece out

If your worried about not welding them straight, use a couple of "V blocks" used for holding round tube/rod/shaft or plate on 45* angles, on a flat surface to keep them aligned. Your metalwork teachers should have a few V blocks tucked away in a safe place, they usually arent freely available to students, as they trash them LOL

Well seeing as the welding stuff wasn't working we were just going to shorten the top slightly by cutting the thread off and re thread the remaining shaft. However the thread is smaller than the shaft so we would require lathe. This probably now won't get done until after HSC or at the very soonest trials. The gear boot however might be sooner as i'm trying to see if a friend who can so can do it for us. When anything happens i'll make an update.
Thanks for the info anyway, will hopefully be useful next time i try this. :)

aye that makes sense. hahaha. Good luck for your HSC and trials man!

Also, as your yr 12, you should be close to having your P's then come on a meet!

Thanks, with any luck i'll go well enough to get into engineering at one of the uni's in sydney, thinking of doing mechanical.
Haha i once schools done i'm definately up for a cruise. Will hopefully be on my p's by then, if not mum can just wait in the car :p
