short shift fitting problem

Hi guys,

So I tried to put in my short shift today... needless to say, it didn't go well. The bushings on the short shift were too big for the pivot points, I had to take the whole assembly out and press it into the left-right pivot point. I found this odd as the bushings on the original shift lever slid into the pivot points very easily.

Anyway, once it was in and bolted up, I tried to select the gears and the stick could hardly move left or right. 1st and 2nd were impossible to find, 5th and reverse took a lot of forcing. the cage was flexing like a prick too and almost seemed like it was going to break.

In the end I put my old stick back in and just changed the knob over. Feels smoother now because I regreased everything but a little disappointed that I couldn't get it to work... any ideas as to why?

Possible things that I could see that might have been the cause were the two circlips around the ball pivot.

Cheers guys

I had the same problem on mine if you are talking about the little white cup things they where to tight to fit and couldnt be used.
I used the original cups and it worked perfect. I also had to remove one of the grub screws as it stuck out to far.
This is on a ce mind you, dont know if yours is the same.

Indeed, this is exactly what I meant. I tried to get the cups off the original one but they are a press fit and are DAMN tight. I don't know if the grub screw was the problem on mine, it seemed more like the circlips on either side of the pivot ball were bumping up against the cage. That said when I took it out, the cage had some damage that looked like it could have been caused by the circlip or the grub screw chewing into the cage.

I used a flat blade on those cups and instead of trying to push them straight off with them slipping about just sort keep pushing them over til the other side of the cup hits the shaft and it levers its self off if that makes any sense. Mine was still a bit tight for a few days but worked fine
Have a read through this thread viewtopic.php?f=41&t=2485&hilit=short+shifter+diy might find some info.

Im pretty sure none of them fit, Everyone Ive talked to has been the same, I just carefully sanded mine down and eventually they slid in with some grease. Also I tried three different Range selectors, one of which will be the same as yours, it was off an Evo 7.

That's fine, but what about the left/right travel of the lever? Anyone have this issue too? It was straight up impossible to push it left enough to select 1st.

You might find that the shift cable on the drivers side is fouling on the plastic, may require some trimming. For the UK short shifter this is a requirement for the short setting, The geometry of yours might be more similar to that

Righto. I might have a look next weekend. Until then I will enjoy my new leather gear knob :D looks kind of cool not having the pattern on the top.

Not sure if you ever managed to get your shifter fitted but I did mine tonight and I had the exact same problem.

First I had to cut the bottom of the cradle out (under the right selector rod)

Second I had to remove the clips above and below the ball joint, it works fine without them as long as the grub screw stays in tight.

Hard to tell but a pic of it fitted without the clip

I also had to file the bottom of the cup that's on the end of the right selector rod as it hit the body when selecting 3rd gear.

Hope this helps man.

Wow! can you get to yours through the console? I just took the whole thing out :p

I didnt have a problem with the selector rods but the circlips around the ball sound like they may well have been the culprit of my misery. Might have to have another crack at some stage!

Cheers mate!!! :D

Hahaha na I took all the centre console out and only thought to take a pic half way through packing up

Quick one, will put pics in ride thread later, FIIIIINALLY got a chance to try again, went in really smooth without the circlip, loctite on the grub screws to be sure.
Also went to wreckers and nabbed a bunch of the cups for the pivots to make life easier. Best $2 I ever spent.

Took off the weight as it was in the way, let me put the knob on lower.

Gone back to the original knob, sitting heaps low xD loving it.

in future, might see if machine shop at work will machine up a custom knob for me from billet with the right thread so I don't have to use those *poo*ty rubber sleeves on a custom knob.

Glad you got yours to fit. Sounds like you had the same problem as me with the clip.

Im thinking I might just try a knob off a cj maybe or a new ch one or an evo as mine is very worn out but it's the only knob that sits low enough

Indeed, before I put the original back on, I drove it to Autobarn to see if they had any threaded custom knobs and I had the sleeved one on.... and yea, it sat so high that it didn't feel any different from the original shifter.

If I end up CADing a knob for the workshop at work, I will post pics or files or something on here.
