hey ive been running rich, changed my fuel filter, checked and gapped plugs, checked timing, at a bit of a loss now

Changing your fuel filter shouldn't change you ECU tune. UNLESS you filter was THAT clogged, then your system as returned to normal. So unless you've been tinkering with reflashes or removing o2 sensors or some crap then you'll be running off the stock tune.

Tune may hve nothing to do with it. Even a partially blocked injector can make ur car run rich. If it doesnt spray correctly the spark wont ignite all of the fuel, and u will smell fuel out of the exhaust. Theres so many factors that could contribute to a car running rich. Even a faulty fuel reg.

I dont think you should just assume your car is running excessively rich, because you think you can smell it. Do you have a mate with a wide band? Also, is it running rich all the time, or just at WOT?

its all stock and you can smell fuel out the exhaust
smell out of the exhaust means jack.
and i presume you are sniffing it at idle?
all i can say is it is not a quantifiable way to see how the engine is running.

Just a left of field idea... Maybe the catalytic converter is past its use by date

-Either way, I'd have it diagnosed properly before you start swapping parts at a stab in the dark guess.

well it runs F###ing rich on idle when cold and its fine at wide open throttle, its the low to moderate load/throttle it does it, yeah i ve had it looked at by a mechanic, may to find someone with a wide band the mechanic said either my cats cactus or its sensors arent reading correctly, o2 etc
