Random noise.

Hey guys,

So I have this occasional noise that pops up when I go over bumps and ripples that sounds like a hollow thud coming from the front left of the car... I have had my mechanic look at it and apparently all the suspension and shocks are fine. It's really starting to *poo* me though... Any ideas or thoughts ??? I would love to be rid of this.

Thanks :)

Often the bush on the top of the shock strut wears and it can either spin and make slight knocking sounds when turning or can 'drum' when going over bumps.. This is hard to test for statically, you can get a decent assessment on a shock tester (thing that shakes your car suspension wildly). I had this issue with both my Falcon Futura and now with my CJ Lancer.

Other than that, have you checked your engine mounts?

Thanks Tryg, I will look into this and I was also thinking it could be that also... I definitely know it's getting worse...

yes, what tryg said,
mine does the same thing, had me baffled at first cause it happened on both stock and after market shocks
but it turned out the bushings on the front drivers was split, its nothing serious, but if it is the case id get on it sooner rather than later
and if you are getting them swapped, get both sides done at once

Cool thanks :) Any idea on the cost to do this ???
kind of hard to say, kinds of depends on what the problems actually turns out to be

best thing you could do next is to take it to someone like pedders (or similar) and get one of those $20 (or whatever it is) suspension check, and they will give you a report on the goods, the bads and the uglies!

^^^^This...!

I guessed it was the bushing on the top of my strut shock, but the Pedders test confirmed my car's malady, and fixed it for $60 (included the initial test). I bought the nolathane bushings and did the work myself, so might be a tad more if you get them to install.. possibly not.

So this would be why my car is leaning to the left even with the wheels aligned and balanced or another undiagnosed problem.

If you have replaced your shocks, you need another alignment... lowering adjusts the way the wheels contact and track, do it...just to be sure...
