Random Noise Mk. 2 ARGH!

So I'm sure you're all getting a little sick of this but my car decided to do something weird today... I had the AC on cause in Queensland it's stupidly hot right now... Anyway, when the car was in neutral with my foot off the clutch a whirring/vibration keeps happening. Any ideas ??? It stops if I put my foot on and engage the clutch.

mine used to do that, regardless of AC on or off
but in the end i got a new clutch kit cause mine was royaly boned (not sure if it was the main problem, but it had to be done anyway)
and since then nothing can be heard, could also of been a belt somewhere too

I have had the belts done... (AC, P.S. and Timing) I'am definitely considering the clutch could be a little tired as it's done 215,800 km... Seems like it's finnally starting to fall apart slowly...

218000 kms, clutch would be just about due. Not really a big problem. My golf used to chatter like you've described when I put a lightened flywheel in it so its possibly the flywheel making the noise if your clutch still feels nice and tight. Either way, if you do the clutch, get a clutch kit, it should come with a flywheel and the other necessary bits

yeh, well if you are deciding on replacing your clutch and what not
you should look into upgrading and not just replacing, just saying :p

I know exactly what you are talking about, cuz it happens to me too!
Vibrating/rattling stops when you engage the clutch, regardless if AC is on or off though. But my car has only done 103,500k's.
It would be nice to be able to fix it, but mines been doing this for quite a while now, so doesn't seem like it's doing any damage.

How much do you reckon Ces ??? Really don't have the money for this at the moment... I'm really not at all mechanically minded either so I can't do it myself...

It won't be the clutch its self at fault, just the thrust bearing. Although can be an indication the clutch is getting on in age.

Keep an ear on it, if it gets worse look into replacing it ( a clutch kit...). Other wise don't stress too much about it ;)
-You'll find it is worse with the air con on as the idle will be higher, making the bearing spin faster.

IF you do replace it, and you want to keep your gear box in good condition, just stick with a factory clutch. There is no point to a more aggressive clutch when your using the car to get to work and home again

The thrust race generally squeals, not vibrates or chatters... Usually once a clutch causes vibrations and starts to make chatterings it's the springs on the pressure plates (not keeping equal tension), which causes unequal take up, hence the vibrations.

But, FWIW, once you're replacing one thing, you generally do the lot; spigot bearing bush and thrust bearing; clutch plates etc... You should also check the fly-wheel, in case it needs machining...

I hope all goes well...

sounds like a bearing has let go or somthing

new exedy heavy duty clutch kit & whatever other bearings will fix it :p

Do u hear some form of rattle in there as well? Is do it will have done what mine did and my ac condenser shat itself.

Normally, but they can create an odd rumbling/grinding/whirring sort of noise. You will only get the squeal when they are running near dry.

Good point on the spigot bearing too, it's kind of weird they don't come in most clutch kits :eh:

My car used to do that, just tighten the AC belt, have the car running with the aircon on so its making the noise while your doing it, as you tighten the belt it should go away, if it doesnt STOP TIGHTENING IT! If its not that it could be the clutch or even the waterpump (mine did this when i first got the car)
