QLD - Turboing your Lancer on your P's

In december the QLD government allowed P platers to turbo your car; as long as you can prove it can only push out 125kw/tonne.

With this law/legislation/restriction you can apply for a turbo exemption for no reason and you will quite probably be granted it as shown in the video.

I know what I'm doing when I have the time and money :)

link to this new law?

no point having a fast car if your keys are locked inside

That things puts out 150+ kw but under that law is at around 110kw/tonne, so legal. Derpppp. I can't turbo my lancer because I imagine it will put out 120kw+ and it only weighs 1tonne to start with. So you can drive around a turbo skyline but not a turbo lancer. Lol. :lolno:

That video doesn't really say anything about what the law is now. Have they allowed p platers to drive turbo conversions or just allowed factory turbo cars? Cos there's a big difference. NSW is currently looking at these laws, and its more to do with making economical cars accessible, such as low capacity turbos like VWs. I'd find it surprising if they're allowing turbo conversions to be exempt with this change.

Haha moving there soon, sounds good - don't have to wait another 6 months to buy a car. Would like to actually see the Law on a government site or something though. Im studying so can't be *fudge*ed looking it up - someone link it :)

They didnt turbo the car, they just bought a factory car that is turbo.

Like Ian said, this is only to make more car accessible as now most of the cars these days are going to small capacity turbos to be more efficient. I think its a stretch to think you can go turbo your lancer willy nilly and get approved.

Authorised dyno + authorised signature from a witness of the transport department (probably the owners of the dyno). Send with the papers. Be cleared for turbo.

That wouldn't be hard.

It's bull. On this law you can buy a 1500kg turbo car pushing out 180kw+, but no turbo Lancer.

Until someone does it, i think its a load of codswallop.

And Im pretty sure you can turbo your lancer. What makes you thinking your turbod lancer would make more than 120kw with just a basic turbo kit?

it was changed because p platers were unable to drive safe new cars. the manufacturers like volkswagon and audi are heading in the turbo direction for economy not power, these cars were packed full of safety features but the p platers (drivers the government considers need them the most) were banned by the government from driving them. Still no mod plates allowed while on your p's so if your planning on converting it to turbo you won't get away with it.... well legally anyway. lol

Not hard to fudge a dyno reading anyway. Aarons old magna made over 700 NM of torque lol.

The CC GSR makes 145kw, dunno what that translates into front wheels, but I'd be nabbing the turbo from a GSR. And power at the wheels.. I would assume is somewhere around 110-115kw at the wheels after being turbo'd (Being optimistic). But being turbo'd (and not wanting my engine to blow apart) I'd need to get extractors, new brakes, etc. I imagine that would push it up to 120kw if not 125+

And inb4someone thinks I said big brakes = more kw

Won't pull you up on brakes, but will pull you up on needing extractors after you turbo it

It's still ridiculous in so many ways. The no v8/turbo laws are dumb to start with. Not because I want either, but because it doesn't justify itself, and just creates a bigger problem.

1. Can drive a 220kw brand new XR6/SV6, can't drive a 120kw turbo Lancer.

2. Can drive a factory 150kw turbo Skyline, can't drive a 120kw turbo Pulsar.

3. Soon as these P-platers go onto their open licences, they just go out and buy a V8 or turbo car straight up. Then they can't handle the power, they wreck them, give the rest of us a bad name, and the cycle continues. I have one mate who is onto his 3rd V8 Holden ute because he keeps crashing them.

4. Excludes certain models and manufacturers, giving them a smaller audience to market to.

Not to mention the immediate power increase form moving to 4 cylinder cars to V8's within a day. And they expect this to work.

Ridiculous.

Seriously, natural selection. If they are stupid enough to jump in a V8 from a low powered car and push it hard enough to crash then they deserve it. Build up to it, and preferably don't do it on the road - or at the very least near me.

Darwinism isn't kicking in mate. They just walk away from every crash and buy another. And my mates who work near the mines and get 100k+ a year, of course they're gonna go buy high powered cars. There's no way they won't, it's pretty much a solid fact. A couple already have BMW's pushing the kw limits.
