Performance mods?

I agree with the others in regards to handling mods, proton or gsr front brakes rears can stay drums, and rear sway bar. Those will make a large difference for a little amount of cash.

I'm getting sick of hearing people flaming anyone ideas of performance mods when they don't want to turbo it.

^ this

people are instantly shut down more and more or looked upon as a dumbass or an idiot or whatever because of this and thats not what a car club/car enthusiast group is about.

well fark me.. lots of people getting worked up over nothing. if you're reading these posts and thinking people are getting flamed or called dumbasses then it's your problem. you're reading too much into it.

recommending a turbo is insight (incite?). seen too many people spend money on all these little mods only to realised they'd pissed off a whole stack of $$$ years down the track to get barely 20kw of gain. in the end, the money could have gone to a proper turbo set up with some real noticeable difference. on the other side, also seen those that took the plunge. these people more often than not, grin from ear to ear on their first taste of boost. happy to take anyone for a ride to explain what im talking about.

no doubt suspension and brakes are important too. but when you're running 1.8l of *fudge* all, how much difference is it really going to make? i don't believe this is going to be a track car. and if i read correctly, the op didn't say "i already have extractors and a cat back. how do i make my car handle better?"

someone in a previous post said "leave engine alone until you can go to town on it!". that's probably the best advice so far in this thread.

yes i agree with you, and especially your last sentence, but once its said once, or they say that they don't want a turbo then there's no need for comments like (turbo or nothing). see to many post when someone asks a question and there first reply is turbo it.

The OP would be crazy to perceive these posts as flaming/hate. They're just pointing out that many people they've met (or they themselves have experienced first hand) have regretted starting with NA, thus, it's best to just go down the turbo road straight away.

I, personally, wouldn't touch the engine of a Lancer unless I had quite a bit of money just lying around. If you have a minimum of >$5k saved up, I don't think it's worth investing money in to a Lancer which will have basically no resale value once/if you get bored of it. I definitely respect those that have spent the money and done the hard work (Mel, Sam, etc.), but I could never see myself doing anything close to this.

But anyway, do whatever makes you happy, man.

Didn't you mention that Excels cleaned up your turbo beast at Lakeside!
yeah lol but a person with 100+ laps under their belt vs a person who has never driven on a track before, Semi slicks vs bob jane all rounders, people trailering a car woth 1500 dollars vs someone who raced his daily and then drive 4 hours home that day. Lots of variables.. second time out i was on par with them, next time out i assume to beat them :p
I know, just racer excuses. But i think you can let me off for my first time out :p

turbos are fun but in front wheel drive format they can be very dangerous. tourqe steering wheel spinning pieces of s*** with out the right gear box set up. yet this is exactly what im doing lol
Really? mine never gets torque steer and grips at all the right times.. you must of drove a poorly settup pos.

OT. I/H/E/save up for a fast car

it's always the same answer because it's always the same question. if you're referring to my original post, i said non-turbo mods are (in my opinion) "ones that aren't really worthwhile." i didn't say get a turbo or nothing. in fact, my advice, would be to do an engine transplant with a gsr (cm5a) lancer rather than do a turbo conversion.

i love corners as much as the next guy. but anyone dismissing straight line acceleration purely for corners, obviously hasn't gone fast enough in a straight line. doing a 58 second lap around calder park (in a 450wkw r32), the main thing i remember was the acceleration from 0-300km down the straight before braking to 100km for the first turn.

I see performance as both power and handling, by advising someone to do the handling aspects first as most people drive their cars every day, it let's them think about what they can do next to improve the speed. I've been killed by many a more powerful car speeding past me on a straight but then to come out of the next corner ahead of them. And for someone on their p's they don't have the option for a turbo therefore handling mods offer the most fun and safety until they can do something more with the engine. From my perspective as someone who has stayed na and built my car up myself I don't regret it for a minute, even all the little mods to squeeze everything out of the engine before doing internals has been fun. I may be putting a 94 in now in place of the 93 but it's still staying na and it will still have balls. Anyone can speed but not everyone can maintain the speed through the corners.

Funny how nobody considers brakes and suspension a performance mod! In the old days, people would sort these out before worrying about straight-line speed...

Yeah but they dont help you beat your mates excel on the bruce highway late at night...

lol.. not when your awesome na engine is struggling to move the weight of all those braces

I am quite happy with 101kw at the wheels.. ok, so it is not turbo speed... but love having a laugh after some serious corners... Laughing at those who have done a turbo, but still cornering like the Queen Mary....

Choose whatever mod you want....

Actually, wasn't that expensive putting in a bigger fuel rail for the larger injectors, all the exhaust mods will still be a good thing even when it comes time to finally get a turbo...but I am serious as cancer when I say all that extra power is still wasted until your car is prepped for laying it down...

Now, I am not a mechanic (so flaming me because you're an engineering student or mechanic will not wash well), but every car that I have had in the past 23 years of driving has been set up this way;
Suspension, then brakes, then NA mods (exhaust, intake, fuel delivery and induction), followed by internals...prior to charging (I have only had two supercharged cars). Wheels and tyres get chucked into the mix around the suspension time too...

I race bikes competitively, so I can tell you that the best on the track is generally not the most powerful (especially on technical circuits). A well set up suspension system and brakes that do not suffer fade are key to real-life (unless you live your life a quarter-mile-at-a-time...type of BS).

braking > handling > (make sure it all works 110%) > power

i think majority of the mods that he can do were mentioned in the 1st page, no need to ramble on and not give any extra options to him (0.2c)

but yes must be all in the stickers :p

(ps this guy drives like a madman and is running 67ish i think)

i have a 4g93 single cam and i found that a 95 magna 2.6 TB fits, wiring plugs too, i think they are 60 mm too.
Had to go through a few at the wrecker, because theres a few different ones.
with extractors and CAI it make a good differents
im going to try 4g94 injectors to up the fuel a little
