my brakes

ok so after being on the forum for like 2 days i have decided to mod my car haha

anyway i have been looking around for a 4g93 and i think i may have found 1 but apart from that i was wondering about the brakes for it..
because it only has disks on the front and drums on the rear... i was wondering do they make disk for the rear... or r all disks universal between front and back( im a noob at this)
plus is it a better idea to have the drums on the back or would it be better to have 4x disk brakes

secondly if i do get this 4g93 will i have to get an upgraded tranns for it because of the power increase or will it be fine with the 1.5L tranns..

any help would be great... thx

As far as i know, the 1.5L transmission is slightly better for acceleration and whatnot, and i think is 100% bolt up.

The current rear brakes, are drum brakes. Not all discs are universial. To convert the rears to disc brakes (like the fronts) you will need the whole setup from another car (check the Brake Upgrade Information thread). Discs wernt made for the lancer as a bolt on upgrade, and as such a lot of research has been done showing what will and will not bolt straight up.

cheers bro.. i do notice that my lancer has a super fast acceleration once the rpm is right but i just wasnt sure thats all

that "sweet spot" is your power band, every engine has that, and gear ratio's (transmissions specs) help a lot too lol. In turbo car's, this sweet spot is insane ;)

A 1.5 5speed is all good on a 1.8. It offers a bit zipper gears down low but the final drive on the 1.5 & 1.8 is just about the same ppl have used both without problems and it proberbly comes down to what's available eg if you had a 1.5 box i don't think anyone would go out and buy the 1.8 box as its proberbly just a waste of money but if you bought a wreck and pulled the motor and box out together you just put it back the same. you'll need the clutch and flywheel for the 1.8 though.

so if i am able to put a 4g93 in my car that wont change the tranns spec will it .... sorry im a bit of a noob

Nope, the engine and gearbox are two seperate parts, but they are bolted together to work.
If you swap the 4g93 in, then the 4g15 would be upbolted from the gearbox, and then the 4g93 is swapped in and bolted up (although im not sure if the gearbox has to come out as well as the engine and then bolted up to the 4g93 and reinserted)

If you use the 1.5 manual box you reuse your 1.5 flywheel and clutch, use the 1.8 box you need matching clutch and flywheel.

I wouldn't worry about upgrading the rear brakes. Drum brakes are actually more efficient than disk brakes because of the larger surface area. only downside is they don't cool down much but i have tracked mine and i know someone else that has tracked with drums and no problems.

just get ur drums adjusted

yeah i guess that would help matty but its an auto so thats not really gonna help hear i thinik

can u upgrade drum brakes to large sized drum brake at any time or do drums come in 1 size

The drums auto adjust when applied.

Have you thought about getting better quality front disc pads & shoes for the drum brakes you have? Generally gives a world of difference compared to what you no doubt have fitted at the moment.
(google - [bendix green stuff] for example)

Just my 2 cents with the talk about the 4g15 to 4g93 conversion. I'm guessing this is your first road registered car and your pretty young? (p plates still?)
Don't bother about the 4g93 swap. Work with what you have. A standard 4g93 isn't quick, and with all the stuffing around you will go through putting one in; you could put the time, effort and money into the 4g15 and end up with a decent engine. Save up, buy some 'decent' extractors, a hi flow catalytic converter, then improve the engine, if you are somewhat mechanically savy (which you would want to be if you are considering an engine conversion), it doesn't take a huge amount of money to get a standard engine to go that little bit better.

anyway, that's what I was thinking, and is just my opinion.

Nick.

hx 4 the advice 81gl.. im currently on my green p's... yeah the reason i was asking about the drums is that i wasnt sure if they could be swapped for better ones or not

and with the engine i was just thinking about it... never really said yes atm but it was a plan...

IMO, i have been working on my 4g15 for ages now, decent parts on it and all... gains are okay but it is still nothing compared to a stock 93
it was however a good learning engine

I thought the flywheel and clutch matched the engine not the box? Correct me if I'm wrong.

+ 1 on that after owning several of both and i just went from a 1.5 to 1.8 as recently as two weeks ago there is a big difference. the torque difference along is with it. short of turbo a for the 1.5 but id imagine you'd be up for thousands, bang for buck 4g93 is the best mod for a 1.5.
In saying that suspension and a adj rear sway bar is a good thing to do. makes notable improvments you can keep the 1.5 singing in the corners.
It will depend on what you want to do with your car eg is it for looks, track days, good handling daily driver etc but that's up to you.

I say 1.5s are not worth it even with all the handling mods.
i have coils, sways, strut braces, antilift kit... etc
and engine has lw pully, throttle body upg, 4-2-1 extractors and CAI

it doesnt make the 4g15 any better to drive
it just made it more bearable to live with and happy to stay at 5krpm without feeling choked
