Major Service

So I've had my lancer for over 2 years and its done about 71,000km and not once had a major service... at how many kms is it usually due?

Read your log book. But by now the brake fluid and coolant should have been done. Manual trans doesn't need to be done til 90k or 105k from memory. Spark plugs have to be done at 100k, but I'd just get them done at the 90k service...

if you get your log book services you'll be fine, everything will be done as per manufactures specifications

Nah don't rely on the dealers, when I was sorting out Sophia's car none of the idiots knew that the log books said the CVT needs a fluid change at 90,000km. You need to check both your log books and receipts to see what the dealer/mechanic are actually doing...

Stuff not to let dealer do, if you have minimal skills;
Oil change, oil filter change, air filter change and spark plug changes.

The above are items that are often 30% overpriced at the dealer.

If you have moderate skills, tackle these;
CVT fluid or manual gearbox fluid changes, coolant changes and brake pad/rotor changes.

If you have a degree of competence, try;
Brake fluid changes, accessory belt (serpentine) changes, timing chain tensioner replacement, caliper rebuilds etc

These are all areas where a dealer/mechanic makes considerable money for very easy home maintenance.

My 2c

Totally agree that the above is very easy to do & can save quite a bit for a dealer service charge. If your car is under warranty though, talk to who ever is supplying the warranty if you touching the car will void it... More than likely it will.

Good call, I should have mentioned that, thanks. I am fortunate enough to have a mechanic friend, who allows me to do above, toward major servicing. Outside of warranty, though, these will save you lots!

Im a chick i rather read a magazine and have a coffee and pay some one to service my car. dont care what it cost as long as its done correctly

Fair enough... I just hate being robbed!

Some dealers are akin to robbers. I have heard of stories where the people gave a high-end oil to the servicing dealer, ostensibly for them to use within the parameters of the service (which they obviously didn't use) and when confronted, the dealer basically said they did change the oil as per the customer's directions (and said, "see...it's new, clean oil", while rolling their eyes...)

The dealer wasn't being too careful, because the customer then said he would contact the police, because the oil was 'Royal Purple', which is actually purple, but the changed oil was golden and quite thick, not the premium oil he gave to the dealer..

This may be urban myth, but the point is... either have a decent relationship with your choice of mechanic or ensure that you know/do enough to make sure the mechanic is doing the right job for you!

Sorry for the rant; pick the guy who is sick of getting the first year apprentices yanking on his car every service! :wtf:

from memory the ce's need their timing belt done at 50k or 100k. cant remember. but best thing to do is do a major service when you get the car then start from scratch at whatever kms it is then :)

She's got a Blue CJ VRX just like in her dp which she has had since new and CJs dont have belts, they have a chain that doesnt need replacing unless it gets loose and noise. CEs would be every 100,000km

Haha, when I got my CE I made the mistake of thinking mine had been done... Turned out to be about 15,000 overdue... Glad I dodged that bullet :D

Guys... This is in the CJ section, in relation to the CJ lancer, if you want to continue your conversation move it to the CE section please, unless you have more knowledge/know how on the Major Service for a CJ lancer.

And BlueVRX, I wish it was that easy to get my car service, instead I have to steadily explain to the mechanic what I've touched and not to re-do it, and then explain to him why i'm not paying him for an fluid change when i've already done one and told him not to... Other then that sorry no info to add.

Yeah I would have driven it into the ground aye without even knowing... She's running like a champ now though just got it serviced :) Not bad considering she's done 214,000 :D

Thanks for that had to skip thru some of the post as it wasnt related to my CJ.

Its running fine i was simple unsure but its all good, well found out the other day the handbrake is stuffed and car needs to parked on flat surface otherwise it rolls back

Coolant an brake fluid every 45k or 2yrs. Plugs at a 100. Air filter every 45k. Gear box oil by the book is 195k but I suggest at 105k.
