Long term average fuel consumption

Hey guys,

I just signed up to the forums, so hey! I am a member over at AussieMagna but recently crashed (not-at-fault) my '04 Magna TL ES Wagon which I had had for several years, which wrote it off. I used the insurance money (and then some) to purchase a 2011 CJ Lancer. A welcome upgrade, all hail the Lancer :why:

The computer in my Magna used to record average fuel consumption on an on-going basis, until I purposefully reset it (meaning that I could obtain a long-term average).

In the Lancer, the fuel consumption resets every time I turn off the car. This means that I can only obtain average consumption for each trip.

Does anyone know how to obtain a long-term average?

Jack.

Turn on your trip meter. Record how many kms you do before you fill up. Record how many L of petrol you fill up with. Work out L/100km. Any easy way is like this:

If you got 480kms to a tank and filled up 40L, dividing 480 by 4.8 will give you your 100km, so divide your 40L by the same amount (4.8) to get the L/100km. Use that as your measurement.

Yeah I suppose I can keep logs like that but would much prefer the trip computer to do it for me :p

For now, I will use this method. One problem, do you know both the full and reserve fuel volumes? Because I would like to know how much fuel is used before the fuel light goes on.

Usually about 10L still in the tank when the light comes on. I think 60L full tank capacity

Is there a mode button or similar to change the fuel consumption mode on the dash?

For fuel volume its easy. The total tank is 59L. So fill up when you get fuel light, and read the volume on the pump. 59L - (Pump number) = How much is left on fuel light.

Filled up last night pretty much as soon as the light came on (600m down the road). That number was 47.24. I am guessing it's really supposed to be 49 but either the fuel detector went off early or the pump detected a full tank too early.

Anyway, now I can get a relatively accurate fuel efficiency, so thanks :)

No worries, its possible you filled up a bit early. I typically wait a bit after i see the fuel light. Usually if i can back off the accelerator and it goes away, i dont count that as fuel light. haha.

I never got more than 51-52L on a refill so your fuel light coming on at 47L sounds about right.

Don't believe you can get anything other than the trip average. Often though the figures are still not 100% accurate. Download an app, always fill the car up fully and then record your kms and litres. This will give you an accurate fuel consumption that you can track over time.
