Gear Knob

This may be a noob as question, but how the f*** do I get my stock gear knob off? I've been twisting it for the past hour and my hands are ruby red and I'll I've managed to do is split the sheath part of the knob from the metal part of the the knob (if you understand my meaning). Thought it would be simply enough but feels like my hands will break before this thing comes off!!
 
must be *fudge*ed.. lol just get a hack saw and saw it off then convert the rest of the pole into a short shifter.. its what i did
 
Twist a bit harder man.

If it hasnt been off before, it will be tight. But then it'll crack and will cone off easy

I think I'll keep trying to twist it for now. Break through the 10 years of *poo* that's holding the bastard there!
 
oh... this happened to me!
with my old one, the thread had broken on the knob and it just twisted with no hope of coming off, then i got out the vice grips and tried that, but it just broke the plastic cover off the knob...

in the end, i took the angle grinder too it and it worked, but in hinesight a hacksaw would of worked too, but im a real man, and real men dont do a half assed job!
cut strait down the top and make sure you dont get the shifter stalk!
(also, if you do my method, put a tarp down, metal shards are a pain to clean up)
 
Turn it anti clockwise

yeah i would have done that but i did a similar thing when i was 16 to my sisters car and it was one of those steering lock poles.. and there was no tarp.. nearly burnt the car down lol.. oh the steering lock was put on because of me...
